using vin number for gear ratio?

Is it possible to assertain, from my VIN number, my gear ratio? 1979 F-250 4x4-bone stock
I had it jacked up in the rear due to a brake dragging issue and turned the driveshaft and observed the drum. It came out exactly to 2:1. Only one side was turning due to the other brake dragging. There is no tag on the cover or housing. I am positive it is not a 2.00 gear ratio.....any ideas?
I am absolutely positive it is bone stock from the factory with 66,400 miles. Thanks.

The gear ratio would be in axle code (I believe) section of the warranty plate. Also, you need to spin it twice if you don't have any traction aids. More than likely a 4.10 ratio if you spun one revolution and got 2:1.

No... on the question.

I assure you it would take more than 2 turns of the driveshaft to get one turn of the wheel.

are you marking parts with chalk to make sure the count is correct ?

a 79 4x4 would have at least an 3.25:1 ratio and more like a 3.54:1 axle

Post the axle code shown on the warranty plate

You never mentioned axle tag info, maybe look for that as well

To clarify, I meant He can also rotate the tire and count drive shaft revolutions.

I thought the 4x4's either got something from the 3.50 lineup or the 4.10 flavor. Never seen a 3.25 gear ratio in my literature.

My friend has a ford shop manuals for the 79 year that shows which codes mean what,.. axle ratio, trans type, transfer case, and so on... I'm not sure if I can get them as he is on a hunting trip, I will try to get these in the next few days. That is all the help i can offer at the moment. Maybe someone else on this wonderful website has access to these books?

i think the best way to find out for sure is to pop the pan off the differential and take a look at the number stamped on the ring gear. because unless you owned it since new, some one between then and now could have changed the rear end.
