Question 1997 F-250 7.3(445cid)DI-Turbo Transmission

Does anyone know where online I can cross reference interchangeable parts for a 1997 F250 7.3(445cid) DI-Turbo 4X4. I need to know what years did Ford use the 5 speed manual transmissions on this truck.

It's a 444 CID.
The Autozone and Advanced computers have it listed wrong.

Any of the 7.3 IDI or 7.3DIT trans will work, even the NBS zf6 will bolt up.

I'm assuming this is a 6 speed trans? I could REALLY use a 6th gear on the highway. I tack 2200-2400 at 60-65.

It's very annoying when cars are zippin past at 70-80.

One more gear would be great.

That 6th gear won't make any difference in rpm's. It just has another low gear. You need different rear end gears to take care of that.

Actually the ZF 6 final drive is .72 whereas the E4OD is .71. The ZF 5S-42 final gear, at .76 or .77 depending, are low enough that it should make some difference. RPMs will be slightly higher than the auto but not so much as the 5 speeds. With 4.10s and auto I was cruising @ 70 mph around 2200ish. 4.10s and ZF 5, 70 mph about 2500ish. Now with 3.55s and ZF 5 I'm back down to 2100 at 70 mph and 1800ish at 65. I can only assume that although not much different the 6 speed will drop them some from what you see on a 5. But be advised even though the ZF 6 bellhousing bolts right up it requires a little fab work to get the whole driveline working together and fit under the truck. I've also been told, but not given concrete numbers, that the ZF 6 low gear isn't much different from our 5 speed low gear. Seems like when they made the 6 it just kind of spaced the gears out a little farther with the addition of an extra shift point. I personally like the drive of a 6 but not all do.

Thanks for the info on gear ratios. Where is a good place to find information like that?

Seems like it'd be too much work for a slight drop in RPM's. I don't want to change the axle gears because the 4.10's are great for towing my 22ft trailer.

I guess I should just spend the money on sound deadening mats for the cab, haha

You can use the 5 speed from any '88-97 7.3, the 99-03 7.3 6 speed will bolt up but requires some fabrication to work right.

The zf6 basically gave you another, taller, start gear than our first.
The Low on the 6 is about our first gear, a bit shorter.
Then first gear is still useless on them from what I found, unless your hauling, then its better than starting with such a short first like we have.

Somebody posted zf5 final drive other day, it was .75 or .76.

Though, I never remember seeing that the zf6's was that low. Can't remember everything.

My build sheet from Ford has it listed wrong then also. It shows it as a 445 CID.

the zf6 is just a pain to do in our trucks, if your REALLY bored then all power too you, but htere was a thread started on powerstrokenation of a guy doing the swap and it basically wasnt worth it, but i think it holds a little more power and it was fun too do. Basically you remold the floor boreds to take care of the clearance, the zf6 is a tall ****. but yeah theres essentially a 1mph difference in the gearing between the zf5 and 6
