Question front axle u-joints

Im wondering how to get the front axle u-joints out. I have one that is siezed up and I'd like to have the 4wd working again. It looks like there is some caps covering the spring clips (?) on the axle, but I really have no clue. If you could please enlighten me, I'd appreciate it.

Some Ujoints came from the factory with a melted plastic "spring clip". That is probably the cap you are talking about. It is used in place of the spring clips. I don't remember the exact details as to how to get them out, whether to melt or cut. I know my Haynes manual has info on it. Once you get the ujoint out, you have to clear the seat for the spring clip as it will still have plastic junk in it.

My truck is about to get new hubs and front ujoints and they have the plastic junk...still original.

Hope this might help.

That plastic stuff should loosen up when heated. I have got them out before cold by a hammer and dowel. Just be carefull not to damage the yoke.
