This morning I plugged the block heater in. My Scangauge read 39 degrees.

1 hour later it was 80 degrees.

2 hours later was 94 degrees.

3 hours later it was 103 degrees.

4 hours later it was 110 degrees.

5 hours later it was 116 degrees.

Yes, 39 isn't that cold to start, but was interesting to see that it went from 39 to 80 in an hour.

Currently my oil temp in hour 3 is 77 degrees. It was 40 at starting point.

Oil temp after 4 hours was 91 degrees.

mine doesn't heat that fast in an hour at higher outside temps if it's 50 an hour later mine was only 70 ?

I will have to check it out again ,, the block heater is slightly lame do to the location of the element so I put a pol pan heater on mine also

 

I would be curios ad to the location of the temp sensor in relation to block hearer location.
If they are both on the same side then after 1 hour perhaps only 1/2 the coolant is at 80 & the other 1/2 is much lower. Our is it going to mix pretty fast regardless?
Good info as I was just thinking about plugging her in and wondered about for how long.
FYI since I had my comp reflashed it sure starts and runs nice when cold!

 

it mixes fast ! with the cold water in the radiator .. ever notice how fast it drops when the t stat opens ?
the ECT sender is front drivers near the t stat so almost the opposite side of the heater

 

each truck may very a little on warm up time.I like your method of time and temp. I always try to plug it in for the least amount of time possible. electric heating elements dont seam to heat as well over time. so in an attempt to make it last I plug it into a timmer and let it go anywhere from 2-4 hours depending on temps.It doesnt look to bad to change either. Its nice to get in a truck thats a little warm my problem is when it gets wet weather my cord trips the breaker always seams to be a fight for power. has anyone moved the plug in for the heater. if i let it hang it almost always trips out. And whats even better than that is when the old lady takes it and forgets to unplug it . I am thinking of moving mine somewhere by the driver door I just think it almost needs to be obvious its plugged in somewhere the driver cant miss it getting in the truck. a oil pan heater would be nice alot of oil thats still cold at startup regardless of coolant temp.

 

i put this but 110 volt in my valance ,, rain isn't an issue and I have forgotten to unplug but it just does it by itself while I back out



your receptical is probably a GFI and while mine is also some are a little finicky specially with loads like heaters

 

I would love to see what those temps are in the middle of winter. It gets a pretty cold up here.

I thought last winter that it only heated to 80deg. I was wrong I have been plugging it in at 35-40 over night and the sct says 119 121 when started. Some of the 10deg below pluss days last winter it was 80 at start and Ive never noticed less than 80?

In all seriousness though, I'm gonna have to try this test. My Edge can give me those readings.

PS I would rather have -40 and sunny, than -1 and overcast with high humidity.

Absolutely! I grew up in NJ now live in FL. The humidity makes it "feel"
so much colder because of how much faster the moisture wicks the
heat from your skin.

I've been in Colorado @ 10* F and it's felt warmer than FL @ 45*

Of course, I've been in Montana @ -40* and that was C O L D.

 

I just ordered that same plug a couple days ago, hoping it might be in the mailbox when i get home. Do you have any pictures of the plug on your truck, i'm just trying to get ideas for when i do my install, hopefully this weekend.
