O/T: Buying American-made this Christmas
#16
Eye jast wisch wee cold al speel an use prooper pucntshewacion!!!
I bought a hat last week, from NRA, beautifully done, Made in USA. No more expensive than imports.
Saw on TV that General Electric is moving its production of dishwashers and some other household appliances back to the East Coast, claiming the overall cost is not that different than imports. I think the legal costs they suffered for dishwashers catching fire might be more than they save in labor on the assembly line (and East Coast ain't cheap labor).
I'd love to see cities give the same tax breaks to existing mfr's here that they give to foreigners building new plants here.

It was intentional in the first paragraph, but was it in the second?
I've said enough, I'm going to let you decide.
--------------------------------------------
FORD14TPU: I assume you're kidding, since the pinhead at High Buck! Bob Allen Ford said the part was marked USA.
Or did he mean the box (possibly came from Tearns Package Co.) was marked Dearborn MI USA?
If it does say Japan, it came from Toyo Kogyo aka Mazda...located in Hiroshima. Ford owned 33% of Mazda back then.

I posted the last MSRP and the dealers net cost. You paid $250.00. That was $82.58 above MSRP. And...$140.55 above what the dealer paid for it.
You could have bought a used fan for 25 bucks at pick-a-part, since the same fan was used in myriad 1985/93 passenger cars...and these yards in CA have an ample supply.

If you are only going to buy American this year, then I suggest Edelbrock! They are American made and proud of it. Maybe get everybody a nice intake or carb! (Just kidding) Also, vitamix is a great american company. Unfortunately, they are two of the few companies left here. American labor unions have driven manufacturing costs up to the point that we cannot compete with other countries. What's the point of making $40/hr if your employer lays you off? The Hondas and Toyotas being built in the US are in plants located far from union cities like Detroit, Dearborn, and Chicago. These new plants are not union and they will not be. That is the only way that they can be competitive.
The American manufacturers have always bought where they could get the best value. When I dissasembled my 54 Ford truck, several of the pieces of sheet metal had "Made in Brazil" stamped on them. That was made over 55 years ago.
As far as buying for Christmas, I suggest everybody buy lite. Or buy everybody a one ounce gold coin to protect the value for the upcoming dollar bubble. Jag

i'd checked the local monrovia Pick A Part before i ordered the one from kansas ,,, all in about the same shape as the orig on my mk vii .. cracking of the plastic ring where it's molded to the steel plate ..last thing i needed was a fan blade punching a hole in my freshly recored brass radiator ,, ohh well i won't have to worry about that for another 21 years or so ..

I agree that fewer goods are produced in the U.S. making it much more difficult to buy American. Further, I agree that the US has switched to a more service oriented society forcing us to purchase products made in a foreign country or providing the opportunity to purchase services that Americans provide. For example, my sisters typically purchase a sweater (foreign made) for my father for Christmas. I have convinced them to consolidate our money and purchase a “car detail” gift certificate from a local detail shop. By doing this, we won’t be sending our money back to China, but keep the money local as well as supporting an American.<O</O
