It looks like someone has already had problems and hacked the harness, then taped over the mess.
Most times the replacement pigtail comes with high quality waterproof heat shrink butt connectors.
Soldering the connections is best, but you might want to slip some heatshrink tubing on first.

The white/blk wire should loop back over to the other plug as you say.

It should work as is and does not need the white wire to loop around.
Will post harness photos and more info in a few hours.

Look at the schematic.
It will still work but why drop the stator-regulator connection?
It is designed and wired that way for a reason.

No argument, just a Q.

I agree, having the stator connection loop around and power the Voltage Regulator (VR) is a good thing. My only point is I am not 100% sure it will fix his problem and if it was me I would be really frustrated if I bought the parts, did all the rewiring and the ALT still didn’t work.
<O</O
When my last junk yard G2 ALT (1986 4.9 G2) was tested at the auto parts store, the bench test harness had the stator wire loop around to the VR, all 3 inputs to the VR where used during the bench testing. But all of the 86 G2 ALT harnesses I have seen only use 2 wires, the green wire which is normal on the “I” input to the VR is at the “S” input.
<O</O
The white wire, shown in the ImageShack photo link, has a connector on it to feed an electric choke as used on a 4.9 carbed engine. It looks like the 4.9 and the 5.0 share the same ALT harness, I would not have guess that they would.
<O</O
At this point if you have tested and found 12v at all the needed points I would just remove the ALT harness and unwrap the tape and give it a good look over. There are 2 splice points that could have failed.
<O</O
Will post some harness photos shortly.

These are photos of a 1986 ALT harness for a 300 ci engine. The small wires at the splice points feed the AMP meter

^^^^
Looks similar to the rat's nest I yanked out of my carbed '87 after my 3rd plug failure.
Went w/ a 130A '93 Taurus v6 3G and a harness from RJM injection technologies.

Good riddance to that pathetic 2G hazard!

Alright, well i changed out the plugs and moved the white wire to the S terminal on the plug, and everything charges up fine now.

Again, thanks a lot for the advice

Man,

So....after working fine for a week or so, my charging problem came back. I checked everything again and can't figure out what is going wrong this time.

Any tests that anyone could suggest would be helpful

Same problem please help.

So was your problem fixed by linking the white wire around to the regulator linkage? I have the same issue with the same harness and I’m stumped as to why I won’t get charge. Just bought a plug online with three wires going to the VR and hoping this will solve the problem. I’m happy to switch the the 3g alternator later but for now just need to get my daily driver back up and running.
