If you decide to go this route you probably will want to talk to the people over at the Ford Six forum: FORDSIX PERFORMANCE • Index page

This has come up before, but I think that the general consensus is that it's a little too long to fit an F-1 engine bay. That's not saying that it can't be done, but I'd plan on having to recess the firewall and run an electric fan. The big six is one of the best engines Ford ever built. I'd like to see it done.

The 300 was my second choice if I decided not to use the 292.

Another good reason to use a 300 is it gives you the option to put either a ZF-5 speed trans or an E4OD on the back. If you decided to use an E4OD, you could use an EFI 300 and the computer for the engine would also operate the transmission!!

Cheers,

Rick

Yes the 300 will fit an F1. But you will probably have to run and electric pusher style cooling fan. I've seen guys running 460's in an F1. And if a 460 will fit then so will a 300!

I think the 460 would present more of a problem with width than length. The 300 is a long engine. Even with the radiator and support moved up to the six cylinder position I think that it will be awfully tight. SOMEBODY needs to give tthis a try and let us know how it goes!

The 300 isn't that long. If I remember correctly is was only an inch or two longer then a SBF V8. And is close to the same length as the 460. It's been a few years since I've worked with the 300's. But I've owned many of them. My memory just sucks!

Yes it will fit but you have to move the rad support as far forward as possible. I'm just in the process of putting one in my '48. I'm not using the stock rad. I'm removing the rad brackets from the support and mounting an aluminum rad in the support and using an electric fan.

Hey Guys, I got my mounts fabbed up and pictures taken. Since I'm a computer idiot I still can't post the pictures, they are in my gallery. Everything looks a little rough right now but body work and engine rebuild are to be done this winter.
I took measurements of the engine location:
Firewall inset to valve cover...2 1/2"
Firewall to front of waterpump...36"
Firewall to front edge of rad support..42 1/2"
Haven't checked but I might be able to use the 48 rad with
an electric fan.
Additional FYI my truck is sitting on a S10 chassis so I don't have the stock crossmember to deal with.

Brian way cool look forward to your progress,I think it will be a cool ride. I am planning to get my flathead on the road and enjoy her until i decide about a doner motor. The flat head is great but I would like to have air and a little more go go without breaking the bank.300 I think fits the bill I did see another post that a f1 was running a 300 six it fit like a glove.Alot of people tell me to run a v8 well I am going to build what I like and something different, maybe after i do it wont be what I think it should be but what the heck its all about the build to me. Wow me me me Brian keep the posts coming.

Thanks George, I started with a sbc but always liked the big sixes. So after alot of measuring and planning I decided to give it a try. The engine will get EFI exhaust and a 4bbl intake and carb. I'll let you know how it works out.
