IIRC its 5300-5500 or so. Much less than what will blow the engine.

I got a second opinion... It was not the engine it was the fly wheel. Ford Dealership tried to pull a fast one. I have it in a shop getting fixed. Thanks for everyone's response.

This is disturbing...Will you speak with the owner of the dealership and/or Ford about this?

also..post the name of the dealership so that others can avoid them.

Yeah, that dealership would have sold you a new engine and sold your old one in the used engine market...double dipping on the profits. Disgusting!

The Dealer was Winner Ford in Dover Delaware. They also told me my rear seals were bad. Turns out there was nothing wrong with my rear seals.

I bought my 2003 Excursion with 78,000 miles in 2008. I put a lot of miles on it. Much of it towing a trailer up to 9,000 lbs. When it reached 193,000 miles, it developed a rod knock. I put a quart of Lucas Oil in it and it quieted the noise down enough to trade it in for a diesel Super Duty three weeks ago. I never expected the V10 to give out at just under 200K. I took care of it, changed the oil regularly. Never had a problem with the transmission. Overall, I was very happy with the truck.

Who determined and how was it determined that it was a "rod knock"?

I had two mechanics look at it and I also know what a rod knock sounds like.

I've worked behind many "experienced mechanics" that swore a modular had a "rod knocking", and it was only a timing chain tensioner that was bad.

I know this has nothing to do with V10's, but is instead a testament to how bad some mechanics really are: a while back a co-worker was making a pass in his Jeep Grand Cherokee and the little inline 6 was giving it all it had, when in mid-pass there was a loud "pop". He pulled to the side of the road and the thing actually idled for a bit, then died. It was then towed to a local shop who diagnosed it as a plugged catalytic converter. I guess he missed the gaping hole in the block and pan where the rod came out! Needless to say, the new converter didn't help...

I just got the call from my local Ford dealer this morning. They said it would be $6,500 to replace the engine. It started knocking about a month ago and got really bad on Friday on the way home from turkeyday. I don't trust the dealer (Heritage in Wesley Chapel, FL) because they screwed me over on my 1st 2000 Exc with the tranny (leaked continuously once they replaced it). Anyways, for the $6,500, they're saying 3 yr/100k warranty...then he quoted me on a new tranny...$3,600. I can't do this job in my garage...wouldn't even think about it. What sucks is that I just bought new tires. I've had it since 2000...have 229k miles on it. Now I'm debating what to do????....thoughts/ideas/suggestions??...thanks.

I wouldnt even be questioning putting 10,100.00 into a nearly 11 year old Ex with 229k on the rest of the drivetrain/suspension.
I'd suggest taking your lumps by parting out the 2000 and the 10 large should go a long way toward getting you a newer vehicle with less mileage. Just my .02.

yep....that's what I'm thinking. Anybody out there wanna buy a nice 2000 Excursion (needs an engine), but it's got a 3" lift with 315 BFG's, 7" flip out DVD player, 15" drop-down monitor.

What did they find (causing the knock) that they are so sure a new engine is required?

A Ford reman 6.8l 2V with warrenty is under $4k. As for the transmission there is no way I would put in a Ford reman or get a dealer to do any trans work.(Learned the hard way)
