problems filling up (Gas)

I've had my 2009 FX4 Screw for 15 months and the following is driving me nuts.

The tank (or more accurately the line into the tank) can't seem to accept more than a low pressure flow of gas. If I try to lock the nozzle of the high setting it clicks of almost immediately and if I set it back to the intermediate level it will go for about 1 or 2 gallons but then click off. I can hear the gas backing up in the line like the tank can't accept the gas fast enough and starts to back-up until activating the pump to shut off.

I've had this issue at numerous stations so I don't think it's isolated to a specific brand or station.

With the 35 gallon tank it can take 2 or 3 times longer to fill-up than it should. Maybe more.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is this something I should be asking my local dealer about.

BTW, love the truck. It's my second FX4. First was a 2002 that I traded in with 195k miles and I can think of no reason I won't be buying another but, while perhaps sounding like a petty complaint, it really is annoying.

Yeah. Tried that. Tried holding it up to give it a "straighter" shot, tried pushing it in further. Tried the handle at all different angles including upside down. Today, I literally tried at least a dozen different configurations and finally quite at 20 gallons.

Thanks for the reply thought.

have you looked behind the fender to see if it is kinked somewhere... just an idea.

I do not know if it is the same but my wifes 07 explorer had the same problem and turned out to be the charcoal canister on the top of the tank was saturated with fuel and not allowing the tank to vent while filling up, it would take almost 20 minutes to get 10 dollars worth of gas in the tank, I have dropped the tank twice and have since removed all the charcoal from the canister and have not had any problems since, just an idea to check into, if you take a hose and blow air into the tank then remove the hose and the tank sounds like a balloon deflating then something is stopped up in the vent system, also if you continue to top off the tank after the gas pump kicks off can aggravate the problem because the excess fuel sloshes into the canister saturating the carbon filter and causing it not to vent properly, but this was on the explorer not sure about the f150 but i would guess it is a similar design, just something to check, i know for a fact that it will make you very mad at the gas pump when the vehicle will not take gas

I have been having the same problem with my 2009 F-150 for a few months and it’s been in the shop many times with many parts changed and it still does it.
I gave up this morning after getting $15 in the tank. They are supposed to be bringing me a loner and picking it up again, thank goodness it’s under warranty. I’m calling Ford again today to let them know the extended warranty they offered isn’t going to cut it. This is the 3rd Ford in a row I have had they couldn’t fix! Good Luck

The fuel tank valve whatever its called gets full of dust and doesn't allow air out fast enough. Certain vehicles are really bad for this (Ford 500 for example). Do you drive gravel roads?

My car does this now too. Horribly frustrating...

Check the gas tank vent tube.My windstar started doing the exact same thing so I took it off and sure enough it was clogged with a bunch of those spider egg sack things. I had been driving it every day and I still do not know how they could have gotten in there or why.

Sounds like it's time to talk to your dealers service dept.
