I live in eastern Oregon and there are no emission requirements here. The air horns have already been removed. The exhaust system is in the plan of mods. Who makes a good single cat back?
Does it help mileage to advance the cam(straight up) to increase the torque and HP at a lower RPM? Did this help mileage? Have you tried a cam that worked with SD?
The F250 has stock tires on it with 4.10 and a E4OD.
I worked and supervised a truck shop for many years and can't tolerate diesel smoke anymore, so no diesel truck for me.
The F250 has 110k on it and engine just seems a little doggy, that is why I'm hoping for some tips from this great site.

I noticed you said you have stock sized tires. have you ever thought about going to a larger tire? i think that would bring your RPM down if you do alot of highway driving? Maybe look into a higher gearing if you don't want larger tires. Trust me i feel your pain man. i had a 2002 R1 as a daily driver and blew that up (long story). Now my F250 460 4WD w/ 4.10 gears is my DD. i get 190 miles on my front tank and 140 on my rear tank. Its hilarious to fill my tank w/ 80 bux of gas. i cruise mainly 65-70 mph here in Va im looking to gear it along w/ other supporting mods stated here and/or larger tires. Good Luck

put shift kit in the trans , port and polish the heads , check out some of the cams that are compatible , put new injectors that are 1-2 sizes bigger in .

I would have to say first of all to all the smart alecs shame on you. This gentleman asked for actual ideas if driving a different vehicle were an option he would. I know I can't Between Oct. 15 and the middle of May at any time it could snow a foot or more here . Second, the strong point of the 460 is that it gets relatively the same mileage empty or loaded I drive in town and on the highway and I haul my own water and it always averages out at 10mpg. I have to agree routine maintenance and an exhaust system would be the best ways to improve mpg. Then possibly some sort of chip or programmer set to economy if switchable. Maybe a cold air intake would help a little. Also I've always got better MPG from a manual over an auto transmission.

Consider a Kia to drive when you don't need the truck.

The only thing I have found that helped even very slightly was going to long tube headers, took me from 11.5 to 12.5.........that is after I quit exploring the new found performance bump.
Mine is my DD-you can buy a lot of gas for the price of a car payment, maintinence, tags, and insurance on another car. It also helps that I have a pretty short commute LOL!

I really wish I could add something more useful here, there are plenty of ways to bring out the performance behemoth the 460 can be.............making it get better mpg.......not so much
It's a ugly reality, those huge bores require a LOT of fuel to operate, its not like a 302 that can be tweaked to get really respectable mpg. ALL that HP and torque come at a price, but as stated by someone above, it does not get too much worse mpg if towing 13,000lbs or running empty to the gas station!(where we are frequent visitors)

Hey CJ could you elaborate on how installing larger injectors would help fuel economy? im always open to hearing new options and was wondering how this would work?

i have a 89 f250 with 460 and it always seemed under powered when pulling . after first engine blew up put another in and still seemed under powered always had to have your foot in it . with bigger injectors and a mild cam that still works with the computer
it woke it up a little bit seems to breath better and pulled better with out your foot into it all the time MPG seemed to improve by some dont have any numbers as the truck would do alot of idling on the job site , mostly seemed to go farther between fill ups .

Get rid of the 4:10s and put in 3:55s or 3:08s if you NEVER tow

can someone tell me about the air horn mod ? is this something in the intake ? my 2 cents would also include removing big heavy *** clutch fan and using electric one .

Hey Diesel Brad,
i never tow, the most that will go in the back off my truck will be 2 to 3 motorcycles or an ATV. Im looking to go w/ bigger tires in the near future maybe 35's would you recommend staying w/ the 4.10 gears so highway cruising isn't sacrificed?

If you were to remove the pair of hoses running parallel to each other from the stock air box you will notice 2 AIR HORN like things looking at ya. I haven't tried this myself, but it might help w/ air flow.

[COLOR=black][FONT=Verdana]You're stuck with bank fire on a speed density, short of going with a MAF option you’re not going to get a realistic option for sequential fire. Don't be tempted by the articles you might find online for that. If you eliminate the TVI-IV and EEC-IV systems completely with a stand alone, tunable option then you can do some things to help. The engine management system offered by FAST with an MSD ready to run distributor would be your best bet. With that, you have a completely programmable engine management system. You can adjust how lean the motor is running at the push of a button. For long trips you can set your cruise air fuel mixture as lean as possible (without damaging the engine) and then set it back for normal driving. You can adjust the AFR at idle, cruise, and wide open throttle to as rich or as lean as you like. All the other options listed about routine maintenance previously are also good, but this is the only option that allows you to physically control the amount of fuel being delivered to the engine while still maintaining normal performance.

If you plan on going to 35s then the 4:10 are fine but w the stock pizza cutters they suck
