Rotella T

After reading the oil wars I still don't know what oil
to put in a 4.9 I6 with 300k on the clock.

Will Rotella T work or any body know what would be the best oil
for it .? I know about the filters just need to pick the rite
oil for this truck.

I run rotella T in all my other rides
but they don't have 300k on them.

The truck dose not smoke or burn oil.

If someone with "oil experience" would let me know which
would be best for the old truck i'ed sure appreciate it.
Thanks a bunch.

No suggestions, but remember that the Rotella T isn't the same oil people have been running for years. The zinc additive needed for flat tappet cam's was removed along with the rest by new government guidelines.

How about Castrol GT? That's what I got for my next oil change.

Can a zink additive be added? Or is there a oil that still has zink and other
stuff still in it for flat tappet cams ?.
What are most high mileage 300 I6 owners using with good results.?
"Any suggestions from high mileage I6 300 owners out there.?"
Thanks for your thoughts and time.

I've had to good luck running penzoil 5w-30 in my 300. It only has 76k on it though. When I ran 10w-40 the vlaves were ticking in the summer. Now that im running 5w-30 no ticking even in the winter.

ZDDP is available for an additive. Brad Penn and Valvoline VR1 are racing oils and have the zinc. GM EOS was off the market for awhile but believe it's available again. STP in the red bottle works, but I haven't been able to find it. These are the only options I know of. I use the Valvoline VR1 myself, but getting the weight oil you want is a little harder to find. Advance store and most chain stores only carry 20w-50w, but it is made in other weights.

There is no "rite" oil. There is no "best" oil. After reading the oil wars forum I am surprised you didn't come to that conclusion. Ford factory recommendation is for 10w-30 SAE/API certified oil.

I run regular penzoil 10w-30 in my 300 i6. I have put wal-mart brand oil in mine and the truck couldn't tell the difference. Just run a regular 10w-30 and a motorcraft oil filter and you will be good.

Only the people breaking in a new flat tappet cam will notice the lack of zinc additive immediately. After engine is well broken in, you won't notice it, but it will shorten the life of the engine.

Follow the cam manufacturer's recommended additives and proceedures for break-in and one is good to go. Also, oil formulators have replaced the zinc with other additives.

All the panic-hype over the new oil formulations is just like the chatter over switching from leaded to unleaded gas. The predicted catastrophic engine failures didn't happen.

I run Rotella T but only because I can buy it locally in 10W30; 15W40 is too heavy for Wyoming winters.
It's "diesel engine" oil, so it has more detergents, but it's backward compatible with gasoline engines.

And it still has zinc in it, just not nearly as much as in the old days. Plenty enough for long engine life.

I use Rotella T 10w-40 during the summer and 10w-30 during the winter on my 95 300. Engine has almost 220k on it and its not burning or leaking oil. In the past I have pretty much bought the best brand on sale that meets the OEM spec. and Motorcraft filter. Over the past 40 years of car ownership I have never had a lubrication failure. I always use the OEM filter and change the oil every four months or 5,000 miles.
Btw this truck just past my old 83 F150 in total miles for #2 on my high mileage list. Its a strong rust free truck in good condition and all of the repairs have been wear items with the exception of the MAP sensor.

'93 ford 146000. I have always ran Penzoil 10w-40. I always use Motor craft FL-1A filters. One time I went to a Penzoil oil quick lube. They used a Penzoil filter which created some engine noise on start up. I switched back to Motor Craft and the noise stopped.

Valvoline VR1 has loads of zinc. Valvoline recommends changing it every 3000 miles. I would run Rotella T5 10w30 Synthetic Blend. Over on the BITOG it has good reviews and is cheap at walmart like 10.50 a gallon last I bought some.
