Help -Why is my F550 6.0 fuel tank liner deteriorating?

<HR style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #d1d1e1; COLOR: #d1d1e1" SIZE=1 itxtvisited="1"><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->I have a 2006 6.0 Diesel F550 4x4 with very low miles and I got the shock of a lifetime when the recent loss of power was based on the fuel system being clogged with liner particles from the 40 gallon tank.....The dealer is saying its the USLD fuel.....They say they will send the tank out to be boiled and re-lined. But why is this even happening? I add fuel additives on each fill up, and stick with name brand diesel....the flue pump is likely ruined as well, and the lines needs to be cleared out as well, along with filters...Im Long Island, NY based

Has anybody heard of such a thing, and my biggest concern is what prevent this from happening again?

Any recourse with Ford, cause it sticks out like its a defect tank...never heard of it especially on less than 4 year old Trucks..

Hopefully I posted in the right forum.....Not sure if it should be in F550 forum?

Heard of it several times, not sure on the chemistry of it but yes ULSD is to be blamed. One thing I haven't heard is if the Diesel kleen additives help with this issue.

Most likely cause is biodiesel. By me, they don't even disclose it but all local diesel is bio mix.

i am having the same problem with my f350, mason dump. i actually stopped the guy testing the fuel at the station where i buy my diesel. he said the additives in the low sulfur diesel are to blame.he said the the additive in simple terms is like salt water, he indicated that the same fuel was damaging the pumps. check your brass water valve, where you drain the water from the fuel , on my and my friends truck it was have eaten away. i started using the diesel keen to boost cetan and sulfur ratings hoping to slow the process. you are lucky that the dealer is going to replace reline the tank.. hopfully it wont happen again.

I would think it may be cheaper to just yank it out and put in a new poly tank, no lining to go bad. I've heard BioDiesel can harm the linings too.

The biodiesel, 5% is causing the problem, it acts like a solvent and breaks down the old diesel on the inside of the tank, the crud then plugs everything up. Once you ahve a new tank and are always using this new fuel you wont have the same problem again unless you use the old style off road fuel. I dont know specifically if they make a poly tank replacement for your model but that would be a good option for prevention too.

Excellent feedback from eveybody - thank you very much..

Im paying through the nose to get this done.....boilinging and re-lining tank, new fuel pump, filters, and blow out or replace some of the lines....

what really concerns the crap outta me, is what stops this from happening again? what can I do other than being already super diligent with fuel, additives to ensure this dosent happen again?

This has happened to my uncles 04 F550 PSD 4 times, a new tank each time. And then the last one he went to court with (i believe) a rep from his dealer for Ford, and the last tank was on them.
