Oil Usage?
Bought my 02' X with 112k and started running rotela synthetic and changing it every 5k. Switched to Amsoil and their filter and was going to run 10k between changes. Found truck two quarts low after 5k of use. Bottom of drive train is dry not showing any leaks. Very little getting by turbo/inter cooler clamps. Anything else I can check before I just except that I'm burning that much oil?

Your oil consumptions is not bad. For some reason synthetics tend to burn more than other oils. I am burning about a quart every 1500 miles and everyone tells me not to worry about it. Some burn more oil than others. It seems this can vary from engine to engine and also depending on how it is driven and they type of oil.

Had been running rotella synthetic for years and changing every 5k. I want to say I was burning 1/2 to 1 quart of rotella every 5k. Switched to Amsoil 14w-50 and their filter and was planning on changing it every 10k. Noticed oil got darker than rotella and also got dark sooner. Found my ex had burned 2qt. at 5k. This is what prompted me to start this thread. Had turned 10k on my 2000 f350 psd and was getting ready to change it and thought to check the stick before draining........nothing! added three quarts to almost get it to the low safety mark! Figure it was running at least 5qts. low. How low can a psd be run before damage occurs? Thought I was told at one time that the engine would stall due to injectors not injecting fuel before any engine damage would occur. How many quarts can this unit loose and still operate and operate without damaging itself. And yes I will be checking my oil regularly now on both rigs. May switch back to rotella.

My Excursion has never leaked a drop of oil in 135k miles. Yet when I change my oil every 5000 miles I'm always down 2 quarts or more. From what I have read the problem is the crankcase ventilation system employed on the 7.3 Powerstroke engine. The crankcase is vented out the top of the drivers cylinder bank directly into the air intake after the air filter. I've had the whole thing apart when I installed my aftermarket crankcase ventilation system and I can tell you there is no restriction in this line to keep the force of the turbo pulling in air to also pull oil and/or oil vapors directly out of the driver's side valve train. Under heavy acceleration or when towing, oil consumption is even worse, which would make sense because you're trying to pull more air through the system.
I mentioned I had installed an aftermarket vent that sent crankcase vapors out the back of the truck through a hose, but during cold weather operation condensation froze in the line. Not good, so off it came and back to stock. In the meantime, there has been so much conflicting information on whether modifying your crankcase ventilation system might help or harm these engines that I'm just leaving it stock for now and living with the oil consumption.
