1995 F150 4X4 transmission ID

Brand new member here--thanks in advance for any help. I have a 1995 F150 4X4 Eddie Bauer with auto tranny. I'm trying to determine what transmission I have. The tag on the transmission is unreadable. The emmissions controls tag lists it as code E. I suspect it is a E40D. What's the difference in a AOD, C6, and E40D? I need to replace the pan gasket and am trying to determine the fluid quanity.

Thanks, Bob

Thanks rla, the decoder posting and 20 bolt pattern helped determine that is was E40D, but I'm still wondering what the physical and mechanical difference in in an E40D, C6, and AOD is?

E4OD is an electronically controlled 4 speed overdrive transmission. The C6 is a mechanical 3 speed transmission. An AOD is a 4 speed overdrive transmission that is also mechanically controlled.

The E4OD would require some type of electronic controller if was installed in a vehicle that did come from the factory with one. The C6 is controlled via a vacuum modulator and control linkage attached to the throttle. The AOD also uses a cable/linkage attached to the throttle to control the internal pressure.
