I'm looking at selling my F250 with the 2V 5.4 for a F150 with the 3V, is there better gas mileage to be had by downsizing? will it be a better truck overall? thanks for any information

I don't really track my mileage, but I get between 15.5 - 16.3 MPG with my 04' 4x4 Supercrew if that helps....

 

I'm not easy on my truck, meaning I don't overly baby it. It's not uncommon for me to take it to 3-4k leaving the line. My documented mileage in the short time I've owned it (almost two months) is 14.24 mpg average.

That's 9 fillups, hand calculated, over 2,155 miles.
This is 60% city, 40% highway

 

there is a gain to be had. your going to a newer (better) [depends on who you ask] motor, in a lighter slightly more stream lined truck. power per ton will be better so your foot will be out of the gas a lot more too.

it wont be like switching to a camery so dont expect to save the difference of a truck payment on gas.

i live in the flat lands of Florida with the scorching summer heat.
news to me is i get better mileage in the summer! around 14-16.
winter im getting 12-14. thats also being nice. when i drive like a pissed off teenager it drops to 9-10. at best.
the truck does do amazingly well on the interstate with a whopping 18 miles per gallon at 70 MPH. any faster and it drops to 14 quickly. 7 mpg at 125 =}

simply put i average 400 miles a tank at 30+ or so gallons.

 

yeah, you'll see a pretty big improvement over your Superduty. A 04+ F-150 is pretty much all around more truck than the 98-01 F-250.

The motor alone will make you happier. I had a 4x4 SuperCrew (4 true doors) that could get upwards of 20 mpg highway. 12-13 with 100% city. mainly depends on how hard you drive her and your gas quality + the terrain. Mountains are going to kill MPG's


are you going to need a F-150 for load hauling that you utilize the F-250 for right now?

 

thanks guys, i'm thinkin that it'll be better, i do a lot of driving at 55-70 and i average around 12-14 no matter what, is the thought that 15-17 on the highway is a good thought with a 4X4 with 3:73's?

 

Have you thought of the F150 HD 8200lbs? I have one, it's like half way between a F150 and a SD. It's only available in one configeration, supercab 8" 5.4. I've got a 2005 and it gets great mileage.

 

i hadn't even heard of a F150 HD, i'll have to look into that, i really don't haul much, 3 bike dirtbike trailer and a 16 foot car trailer with a tractor on it every now and then and that only probably weighs 4500 altogether , stepping down to a F150 sounds like a good move for myself, i'm 18 and in college right now, so better gas mileage will be nice, any thoughts on a good cab and drivetrain configuration, i definitely want 4X4 as I like the stance and occassionaly need it for setting traps and into some dirtbike tracks, thanks for all the help guys

 

I just drove 403 miles 650 klicks, with my 08 F150 5.4 with a full load, Steel sled deck Whole Bull moose 900 feet of 5/16 cable and rope all my hunting gear and I still have 1/4 tank left 135 liter tank 30 gal

when "stock"...20 mpg highway @ 60-70 mph over longer distances.

when supercharged...well, it got 12.5 mpg with 100% city driving and rubber roasting. sorry, no highway mileage in this setup.


4x4 with 3.73 gears on 32" tires. every bit of 6,000 lbs with a 8,700 lb tow capacity





sounds like a 04+ would fit your needs. A HD F-150 would be pretty awesome as well. they have 4.10 gears from the factory

 

My truck is the 4x4 with 3.73s and yes, that's generally about the range I'm in on a tank when I'm not on it hard. Best tank thus far was 16.66 which was 80% highway (75mph) and 20% city.

 

I got a supercab 4x4 with 3.73's. I get average 15.5-16. I had an '02 2 valve with 3.55's before, it got 13-14. I would say if you moved up to a 3 valve, and minus the weight of the larger truck you'd see another mpg or two than what I did. Most of my trips are 10 mile trips to town, then a bit of city driving.

 

thanks for all the help guys, i think i'll go with a 4X4 04+ F150, that'll pull everything i need it to and still get good gas mileage when i'm not pulling, i've heard on the 04's that there are some problems with the cam phasers? is this easily fixed? i already know of the sparkplug problem, but i'll prolly knock that out when i first get the truck so i know its fresh and i can see what it looks like

 

FYI, these trucks have a 4.10 rear. I have one (4x4) and the mileage isn't very good, around 12 mpg.

 

yeah the cam phases are a bitch but i think the late 06 and up have a better design and less problems and i think the late 07 and up dont have the plug problems as bad. get a super crew 4x4 and if its 80,000 miles or more try to get one with proof of spark plug changes already done.
