Amazon has a few good books on riding US66 and some of the more interesting portions of it; "Americana", working towns, etc.

I picked up a few a while back but haven't ventured out with them. US66 in ABQ, NM runs thru the *** Hill area (Central Ave) and still has many of the old neon signs still standing in front of empty lots as well as may of the older establishments.

Love that old neon and the old abandoned gas stations that are found along routes like that.

As for driving 66, check with ctubutis/Chris. I believe he and his brother did a fair part of that a couple of years ago. But, the road is gone in many places so you surely have to get over on other roads and come back to it time after time.
There are several parking lots and open spaces where you can park with a boat long enough for a walk down memory lane. The town is now rather deserted.

That's good and bad. Good for me, but bad for the town - which is exactly why my daughter cried when she saw Cars for the first time.

Mention of Flo's cafe reminded me of this: The real Route 66 inspirations behind Disney's Cars Land - latimes. According to it, and other things I've read, the inspiration for Flo's was the Rock Cafe in Stroud, OK. We've eaten there and it is unique, although I don't see the relationship.

However, I do see the relationship between many of the other things in the movie - which I've seen 14 times by actual count because my grandson loves it. So, if you like the movie it would be good to read up on it before you go as seeing those things would be interesting.

New batteries and new crossover cable. I had to add another hold down on the front, the cable is just a little long and that curve stuck out enough, the hood wouldn't close.

Not so much to but more so 'for'. Was up in ABQ the last day or two and hit a junk yard on the way back to Las Cruces. Found my tailgate linkage rods and a handle with the clips held in solid and all in perfect condition! Good call on that one, Gary - these rods look a lot stronger than what I had snap in mine.

Also found a 2 barrel air cleaner with the snorkel still on it and a perfectly good washer/overflow tank. Throw in a set of fully stitched visors and a full clean set of hood letters and it felt like a good day being I was only hoping to find at least one tailgate rod.

Good! Did you happen to get the later model overflow tank with the hose that goes in from the bottom? If so, did you get the bracket that screws onto the fender?

Sounds like a reasonable plan since Binder parts are pretty scarce. Keep us posted.

Overflow hose goes in from the top on this one as does mine. But I grabbed the bracket anyway and every bolt and wire I could get. Not a one with the toolbox in the yard to be found - bad or otherwise.

Is the later model a better idea?

Yes, the later model is better. I've described the differences and show how to swap from the early one to the late one on my web site here: Coolant Recovery & Windshield Washer Reservoirs - ?Gary's Garagemahal

Note that I did a similar write-up on FTE here, but FTE is not good for documenting things since I cannot go back and edit them later when I need to make an upgrade. So, I'm discontinuing documenting things on FTE and documenting them on my web site where I can update them later when needed - as I have done with this page.

Also, in case you've missed it, I now have a search function on my web site. At the top of each page there is a search bar, and there's even a separate Search Page for those that are so inclined. And, this searches only my web site, although Google throws in some advertising links. So, it is an easy way to get around and find things.

Set the engine/trans into place, although a bit higher than it will end up:

We found a donor 96 Taurus at the junk yard got the 130 amp 3G alt. And a set of cooling fans. We started to remove the complete wiring harness from the engine bay but ran out of time. we will be making a trip back to get the rest of it.

That sure is a great reference source - thanks again for putting all that together! It's great having those part number sheets available to see what years things are shared.

I'll be back in ABQ tomorrow so I'll hit the yard again with an eye out for the later model. Very nice!
