This could be the headlight switch or ignition switch issue. Gary has been through some of the electrical issues. This is why a lot of us started putting relays in place in order to fix the overload issues.

David is right - it is probably a bad connection. Or a battery that isn't charged. A poor connection or a discharged battery can supply enough current to light the dome light but not start the engine.
Also check the cables as the terminals may not be well connected to the wire. And don't forget the ground wire.
Sounds like either it occasionally, like maybe after a sudden stop, or sitting somewhat nose down gets a little air in the screen or it is just the gauge reflecting the pulses of the gerotor style pump.
That's the same thing I was wondering. And, after extended periods of idling in traffic with it like that, I've seen it just stop doing it at times.
If you have a 300, 302 or 351W automatic, get a 1990 Lincoln Town Car starter, it is a PMGR unit that fits these applications. For a manual trans you need a later truck MT starter. This does away with the high current load on the starter relay which ultimately welds the Chinese terminals together or burns them out.
You have to do a little rewiring. but if you can find a later battery cable set in good condition in a junkyard then you can fix it nicely.
Put my DS II coil connector on today. Soldered and heat shrinked. The negative isn't as nice of a solder as the positive but it's nice and sturdy and I can't make it flex or anything. Good enough.
got it to start and run had to change the fuel filter but now it backfires at half throttle trough my carb is this timing or accelerator pump? I'm puzzled
Accelerator pump only operates as you move the throttle. So if the backfire is as you throttle up, and is accompanied by a brief loss of power, then it is probably the accelerator pump.

thats exactly what it does ill be half way down and it'll back fire then clear itself out and go the rest of the way
