Wow! That's fast on u-joints. Well done. And, w/o needles they do tend to clunk. One of mine I pulled apart had rust in the cap, but nothing else. As for the steering gear, that should help significantly. But, the one I did was a pain as getting the Pitman arm off was a lot of work. Also, look very, very closely at the frame where the rear of the box fits up against it. That's where my crack was, and it didn't show up until I took a pic and the flash coming at an angle created a shadow on the crack.

As for what I did today, I finished the alternator:

Just found this cool article by a fellow FTE member about the factory where my truck was built. I didn't know that a small section of the mall had been devoted to Ford's previous occupancy. Pretty cool.

I de-auto-fied it. Took out the auto trans pedals and column, and made the required mounting holes for a clutch master cyl.

I loved that part when I did the manual transmission swap on my Ranger.

I did that the hard way - my manual column's bearings were toast so I had to swap internals. But it did feel good.

My passenger side windshield wiper rod slipped off a couple of weeks ago, so today I pulled the cowl and fixed it. Also installed some hoop steps to help my short wife get in, then I put new rubber on the brake and clutch petals.

Yes, that is a cool thread. And, it is cool that he was able to walk in the plant where the truck he's restoring was built. Not many of us have that opportunity.

i have not been able to go to the plant were my 61 unibody came from, but I was able to go to the still functioning dealership that it came from.

Cazenave Ford

Been in the same location for 100 years on the Mississippi River Road in Vacherie, La. Same building and all. Family owned and operated. Sits by the cane fields. They have never advertised and can not find much about them on the net.

Very nice people. They come to your house, leave a loaner car, take your car, and return it to your home when they finish service.

They gave me a keyfob that looks like it is from the 60's. I was going to throw out the bumper on the back with their name on it, but think I will keep it on now.

Thanks for the link Shaun, that was pretty cool to read.

Yup. My son wouldn't be able to steal it. But my daughter could.

I'd like to make the trip someday myself. With or without my truck. A photo opportunity with my truck and the giant stone they have outside that commemorates Ford's prior inhabitance would be amazing. But I don't know if I'll ever be able to trust the F150 enough to make it to California.

Shaun - You will be able to. These things aren't that complex, so once you have a couple of thousand miles under your belt you'll be ready to head off anywhere. Remember, it was my wife that suggested we take Dad's truck to DE to deliver the furniture.

This is true. I plan to redo all of the wiring, and I think that's where my biggest worry would be.
