What have you done to your truck today?
Not going to clear coat it, it's just single stage paint like the rest of the factory paint on the truck is. As far as painting the letters, I'm going to do that in the spring, for a short project. Or just buy the decal kit for it. I have a lot of other things to work on around here that have been breaking down lately, this truck is needed for transportation right now. I haven't been able to drive it in a week and a half, I get my new 3G alternator tomorrow from UPS. Finally, I've needed the truck 3 times. But, the letters will be painted at some point.
I don't think I'm going to do that with mine. I'm leaning toward the Bronco style badging on it. I have a fifth wheel gate right now, so I figured I'd switch to an aftermarket plain tail gate and use the Bronco's F-O-R-D lettering kit. In a corner. I think the chrome will pop more with old Highland Green paint.
I understand the classic look, but I am going for a "Bullit Tribute" build on mine, so I want a few touches to set it apart from the rest of the fleet. And nothing overtly obvious.
I can get them in blue for 1980-86 as well. If I don't go that route, I'll just use the same blue paint I used on the cab and tailgate. I thought I'd have used a lot more paint than that. I only used 1/2 quart of paint itself for the roof and tailgate, then the reducer and hardener. I only used 1/2 pint of white, and that's after 4 coats trying to fix a plastic disaster when it flew up on the paint. Can't really see those anymore! I was not expecting this Sherwin Williams Dimension paint to cover that well. Stuff covered excellent and is easy to work with.
That's the plan. Now if only I could find a factory CB setup that wasn't $200+ dollars.
On a side note, does anybody remember the wheel colors for trucks with hubcaps off hand? I remember there was a huge discussion about it a few years back, but I can't seem to find the thread. I'm pretty sure it was something like trucks with full wheel covers had argent wheels, and trucks with no hub caps or dog dish hub caps had white wheels. Correct me if I'm wrong.

For 1984 [could be other years as well], 2 wheel drive trucks which came with dog dish hubcaps were black. The 4 wheel drive trucks with dog dish had white wheels. [trivia - 2 WD was 5.5" wide and 4 WD was 6.0" wide]
Thanks, Gary! Glad you got to drive it... don't you love that big rush of power and you roll on the throttle?
Now the truck won't look like a hillbilly deluxe anymore, especially when I go have the back of the tailgate lined to match the bed. I'm pretty sure that's what Ford did, used the same color for the lettering as everything else on my model. At least that's what it looked like in the 2007 pic of the truck sitting in the original owners driveway on Google maps lol.
