Converted the truck to electric fan today. Very happy so far. Surprised me quite a bit with how much power that mechanical fan robbed. Driving around on a 50-55 degree day like this the wind resistance from going down the road keeps the truck at 190 and the only time the fan has come on is at idle after a minute of idling. Keeps it steady and the fan blows air like a hurricane.

As far as amp draw from that fan. It doesn't even draw enough to make the ammeter or volt meter in the truck change. Idle speed remains the same except for the moment it comes on.

Of course it doesn't load the charging system.
You already stated it is only 95W... or something like that.

As long as you realize that without a shroud your nice radiator is now only as big as that fan circle if you have no forward motion on a hot day.

Leaving a LOT on the table...

I still have work to do there. Was thinking about making one out of an old cookie sheet like some people have. I'll have to get creative there. I don't see the original fan shroud working with the electric fan. But, for now it works. Doesn't get much hotter than 80* in the summer here.

Matthew - Why didn't you go with one from a vehicle with the same sized radiator? That way the fans, plural, would cover the whole radiator. I'm thinking several of the adores had the right fan setup.

Didn't know of any, plus I looked up the fans from the mark VIII and whatever else those hurricane fans were used and they were like $85 for a new one. I don't have that kind of money for a fan PLUS a controller. Plus, the fan I bought has a lifetime warranty. I'll just make a shroud for it sometime.

Taurus fans seem to fit with some minor trimming of the shroud.
There's a bazillion writeups.

They're only about $45 on Ebay.
...they do draw considerably more current though.

Actually, the only one I found that fits the exact size of our radiators is a late Crown Victoria fan, 2000 up. It should work perfectly on a shorter engine, but is about 1/4" too deep for a 460. It is a dual speed motor, but draws a ton of power on high.

As for a "shroud" around your fan, see if you can fabricate an approximately 1" thick box with the fan attached to it. It doesn't even need to be centered. Once the fan location is done, cut some openings and cover the back side of them with rubber flaps. That is what Chrysler did on a lot of their FWD setups, fan pulls air through at stops and low speeds, at high speeds the flaps push open for more flow.

Chris that was exactly what I meant, the term "Mickey Mouse" is what the used car trade uses to describe dealer installed or aftermarket systems.

Bill - Any idea how much power on high? More than a stock relay can handle? And is it one fan or two in the housing?

The 1" box thing is exactly what I'm going to do. It just turns out I can get a 18"x16"x1" cooking sheet do to the exact same thing. The dimensions for the fin spread on my radiator is 27.5" long by 18.5" wide. The pan is 26" long and 18" wide, by 1" deep. That's about as close to perfect as I'm going to get. Plus it's cheaper than buying a big piece of sheet metal here which is ridiculously expensive and hard to find for some odd reason.

Today I installed four more 194 LED bulbs. Not sure what is going on with the high beam indicator, but the rest work fine. It flashed once, so I can assume the bulb is in correctly. Also did the brake and seat belt lights. No problems there. Then I took the boys on a short drive. Put fifty in the tanks, and it still wasn't full. Oh well. Plenty of fuel for tuning now.

Later I am going to a benefit car show, so I'll try to get some pics for GP.

I had that problem with one of my turn signal indicators. Bad connection. Wiggled it around and it's been fine ever since.
