Academy blue I surmise? Is this a 223 cu in straight 6 or the 292 cu in V8?
I'd look at the idle mixture circuit first and see if the idle mixture is correct, and then the idle mixture circuit (passages) to see if it has plugged up or gummed up. Perhaps the idle mixture needle's gasket has disintegrated and is allowing either too much fuel by its absence or too little fuel by obstructing the idle circuit.
Is it difficult to start too, or not?

Welcome to FTE.Not sure how long it has sat, but probably the first thing to do is rebuild the carb,or perhaps buy a rebuilt one.I would personally remove and clean the tank if it has been unused for a few years.Change fuel filter, replace carb base gasket.Where are you?If you put your location in your profile, it'll show up, and maybe someone close by can help you out.Good luck.

Hi and welcome to the Old Truck Forum!
Your idle problem as previously mentioned sounds like one of two things - either you ridle mixture is not set correctly, or your mechanical idle set screw is not set correctly.
Both are easy to fix. First just for grins, gently run you ridle mixture screws in all the way, but be careful not to tighten them as you can damage the screw tips. Then back them out two full turns. Start the truck up, let it warm up and see how it idles.
If it still won't, then slowly turn up the mechanical set screw that sets the idle rpm.
After you get it to the point where it will start to idle, balance your timing, idle mixture and idle rpm to their best settings with a vacuum gauge as described in theis thread:

Good luck!
