I have a 1976 F100 with a 1969 351w, and a 1979 front clip. The power steering belt goes from the waterpump / fan pulley, down to the harmonic balancer and over to the power steering pump, as it should. But, the pulley on the pump sits one groove closer to the front of the truck than the corresponding groove on the waterpump pulley and the harmonic balancer pulley. Of course, this causes the belts to wear quickly and it is also pulling in the power steering pump shaft, which will eventually cause it to go.

I looked at the setup, and assume it is a factory 1976 power steering pump, pulley and mounting brackets. But, there are a few things that appear off:

1. there is a rectangular block that is approximately 1/2" by 1/2" by 4" long that is between the block and the pump
2. there are about 5 washers stacked on one of the upper bolts that goes through the pump and into the block

Does anyone have a picture (close up, in focus) showing how the factory setup should look? I was going to remove the block, add a spacer between the mounting bracket and the pump assembly, but would rather see the right way to do it before I mess with it any more.

thanks for the pics, but what I need are close-ups showing the mounting bracket where it meets the block, as well as the front bracket where it meets the mounting bracket / pump. I'll try to take a picture of mine and post later tonight

My front bracket looks the same, and I think the aluminum bracket is the same. the rear black bracket on your pictures isn't on mine, which I'm guessing they used the rectangle block as a substitute. I'm going to remove it and place it up front and change it a little, as I can't drive with it like this. I'll try to find a used bracket on a junkyard truck and swap them out.

 

When P/S is present there are idler pulleys associated with it. One is fixed, one is adjustable.

Without these idler pulleys, the belts will not line up correctly, the reason for the mickey-moused bracket installation.

Both passenger cars and trucks used these idler pulleys.

The power steering pump is essentially the same: 1965/77 Passenger Cars & 1966/77 F100/350's. It has a steel reservoir.

Ford changed the P/S pump in 1978 on everything except Econolines. It has a plastic reservoir.

The P/S hoses and brackets used with the pump with the steel reservoir will not work with the pump with the plastic reservoir.

1969/74: Only passenger cars came with 351W's. It was first offered in Econolines in 1975, and was first offered in F150/350's and Bronco's in 1981.

first today: There is no such thing as a 1974 Granada. First year: 1975. 1975/77 Granada/Monarch's were available with a 302 & a 351W. No 351W's after 1977.

It's kinda hard to make out: The first pic shows 1975/79 Econolines. The second 1978/79 F100/350's. Notice the difference in the P/S pump compared to the pump in the third pic.

Third pic: Since the 351W was not available until 1981 in F150/350's & Bronco's, y'all should not go by pics of F100/350's if a 351W has been swapped in. It will be similar only.

And...the OP is using a 351W from a 1969 Passenger Car. The arrangement will be similar only.

NOTE: The parts with the basic number of 8678 are the idler pulleys.

 

I'm wondering if the p/o used a 302 bracket on the 351, and didn't swap all the parts / was missing parts?
