Question towing capacity of my x

I am confused on towing capacity. My Eddie Bower edition has the info plate but it always confuses me. If I want to pull a 11,659 lb travel trailer with my X, can i. I look online and it tells me 11,000 lb, but it says 12,500 lbs on the other part of the sticker.

The hitch may be rated for that amount, but your Ex may not be.

Look up under Trailer Life and they have tow guides for a specific year model. Then look up Excursion and what engine, 4X4, gear ratio, etc. to get what your tow capacity would be.

Is 11,659 lb the GVW of the trailer? Or is it actual measured weight? Wow. That is big. What is hitch weight?

The maximum any Ex was ever "rated" in tow rating capacity is 11,000#'s

Those Ex's would be the 7.3L, 6.oH both with 3.73's and the V10 with 4.30's

I tow a 9000# TT behind my Ex and I'm AT or can actually be slight OVER the 8900# GVWR of my Ex because of the 1100# (no water) to 1200#'s (with fresh water) of tongue weight...my GCW when hitched is 17,000#'s...and the PSD versions are even WORSE when it comes to GVWR even though the PSD Ex has a higher GVWR (9200#) the PSD weighs significantly MORE than the V10 thus reducing the overall available payload.

I have 4 people in my family and carry some stuff inside the Ex when we tow.

No matter how you slice it...even though Ford "rates" these trucks at 11,000#'s maximum tow rating if properly equipped...medium to larger families WILL max out the GVWR of the Ex LONG BEFORE you approach the "max" tow rating.

Forest has a good question...that 11,659 is an "odd" number almost like it is an actual weight...if that is the case...it is my opinion...you are out of an Ex's league no matter what motor you have...this of course is just my opinion...

Good luck,
Joe.

the hitch weight is 1235 pounds. I believe the trailer is the Residence from Keystone, Jayco also has one called the bungalow. They advertise them as travel trailers but someone else told me they are meant for towing a bit and then parking for long periods of time. Very nice trailers though.

unloaded weight is 11,005 the GVW is 12,500 and the dry hitch weight is 1660. Sounds like what yall are saying is that if I try to tow this thing I could be in trouble and expensive repairs. Think I will stay away from something that big. Thanks

So in reading all this info and thread I started on Towing Help it sounds like towing my TT with a curb weight of 8100lbs and close to 10500 loaded to camp in is possible but near the max correct? 2005 4x4 V10 with 373's.....if I add my 4 family members we are maxing out GVW of EX as well.

Good decision to stay away from something that large for an Ex...

Impossible to truly say one way or another without actual weights of the Ex loaded for camping and how much your trailer actually scales at.

GVWR of the TT is a good starting point but actual scale weights would be the most accurate.

Your family of four may be larger or smaller (i.e. heavier or lighter) than the next family of four...think about say William the Fridge Perry's family versus say minnie me's family...BIG difference in weight and available payload of the Ex

Chances are though that the GVWR and the rear GAWR are the two that you will max out given the weight of the TT and required tongue weight for towing stability...the GCWR on the Ex is the LAST rating you will exceed in my experience.

Good luck,
Joe.

IIRC, if the X is chipped the towing capacity will decrease. With my Diablo, I am now reduced to 8600 pounds. Not sure if yours is stock or not. Mine is a 7.3 though. Just a thought. Good luck.

Yes, those are "park model" travel trailers. they are built like a TT but are meant to be towed to a site and set up permanently. they are easier to tow than a true park model.

either way that would be to much to put behind an X!
