7.3 vs 7.3 turbo

Hello!

I bought my first diesel car, little 1.6 escort and im impressed now diesel engines.

Im v8 and usa car man, i own now olds and my former car was 79 bronco 351m.

Now i have thinks to ask here because i want ford diesel, not gm garbage.

I looked spareparts for naturally aspired diesel and turbo version, uh! Injectors was 40$ vs 140$ etc... and turbo + electrical components make me feel poor because i like old school diesels now, lol.

So can i do anything with non turbo engine? Or can i tune it somehow without turbo?

One big thing too is that i want 3gen econoline or 8gen fseries truck and these have non turbo engines yeah.

How about mileage differents about tbo and non tbo?

I have exprecience about gasoline engines but not diesel, im lost.

Sorry for my bad language, from finland

you dont need the turbo injectors, bb codes are everywhere and not that expensive. you can tune n/a and turbo engines the same, its the same engine.... just with a turbo ontop. theres also tons of kits around to add a turbo on the n/a engine. just make sure you test for sca's before you buy. if they havent been kept in check then you could be close, if not already into cavitation. mileage difference between n/a and turbo is different for everyone. it depends on how you drive and how you use the truck. for me, i got 4.7mpg increase when towing. if you have questions about "sca's" or "cavitation" then just do a search. there will be plenty of topics to inform you.

For sure get a turbo idi or a decent idi and add an aftermarket turbo. The idi engines are 100% mechanical and easier to work on then newer powerstroke diesels. As oreo stated the tuning etc on idi to idi turbo is the same, the only difference is the turbo will give you more power and better mileage.

Welcome!

Just to clear things a bit, 140$ is a lot for IDI injectors, even G code are only 50$ here, are you thinking of Powerstroke injectors?

1994 1/2 On - Powerstroke diesel (Turbo)
1993 1/2 to 1994 1/2 - IDI diesel (Turbo)
up to 1993 1/2 - IDI diesel N/A (Non-Turbo)

As to the electronics, all IDIs including the turbo year are mechanical, so you still get the great easy-to-work-on engine.
As oreo said, although the turbo IDIs used G code injectors (~50$) the ~40$ BB code injectors work fine in the turbo version as well.

There are plenty of guys on here that run turbos, either the ATS turbo from the factory turbo year, aftermarket ATS, Banks or Hypermax units that are sold as kits. Plus I'm sure there are some creative ones out there too...

Turbo improves mileage, assuming you drive the same way. But, add the turbo and you're bound to use some of the available power. The turbo doesnt directly increase power, it increases efficiency, which can be in the form of more power or less fuel for the same power; its a double-edged sword.

Example, I added a Banks system, and the first few tanks disappeared very quickly... now I'm back at around 18MPG where I was before but I have a lot more fun driving!

thanks for answers, i try understand
i mean that 140$ was powerstroke price and 40$ without turbo.

and that turbo and non turbo comparisation what i meaned was idi diesel n/a vs powerstroke, because there in finland idis are little bit rares and idi turbos.... i dont know even is there anything these.

aftermarket turbo in finland is hard to inspect in road use and aftermarket turbo is also executive.

turbo is only way to get idi n/a more power?

how about idi n/a vs 350cid chevy van, acceleration etc?

Adding a turbo to an idi is not the only way to get more power but it is the single biggest power upgrade you can do. You could probably get a turbo kit used off ebay.

turbo price is not the only harm, law is another thing that difficults aftermarket turbo.

Yea, you can add some power by expanding the exhaust, modifying the intake to bring in more air and cold air from outside if it doesnt already, turning up the injection pump etc... but the big noticeable difference is through adding a turbo. Adding a good aftermarket turbo will let you compare to the 7.3 powerstrokes, and the simplicity is much better. Change a few powerstroke parts and it starts to make the cost of adding a turbo look much better!

Turbo kits are expensive new, I paid about 3800$ for my Banks, but thats brand new all parts included with year-specific step-by-step instructions, you should be able to find one for less than 1000$ on eBay or Kijiji etc. as long as you're willing to work with it.

Are Finnish laws tough on all modifications? I know adding a turbo to a gas engine could be seen as unecessary or as a racing modification not meant for the road, but turbos on diesels are almost standard these days...
