5.4 vs v10

hey guys i have been thinking of getting another truck and kind of want some real world info.I have a 05 f250 ccsb 4x4 with the 5.4.She has 120,000 on her and when i pull my camper she does it but man she turns like 4,000 rpms keeping her at 70-75.It's a travel trailer and weighs like 7,500 lbs dry.Now at about 55-60 mph it's not bad but man it kind of struggles getting her to 70.Don't get me wrong i love the truck it pulls the trailer great just need more power.lol.Is there a real big difference in power between the 2.I think my 5.4 has 300hp and the v10 has 360 or something torque i am not sure of though.Just wondering if there is a great difference in towing power between the 2 or if it is really not that much different.I haven't drove a v10 to know the real feel of any power difference.I ussually only tow it maybe 4 to 5 times a year and not for great distances but man u know when it is hooked up power wise.lol.

just get a tuner...

for teh small amount of towing your doing its not worthwhile replacing the truck over..

althou the V10s torque increase over the 5.4 is sizeable.

I can't say what the difference between the 5.4 vs V10 is, but I can tell you what I experienced about the difference between the 5.7 Suburban and my V10 Ford is. It's like night and day pulling the exact same load. With the Suburban I had my foot to the floor quite often during our trips up the coast to the Oregon dunes towing our 18ft toy hauler and usually couldn't maintain the speed limit. With the V10 I just set the cruise control at whatever speed I fell like going and it takes care of the rest. It does get about 1 mpg worse mileage when towing (same when empty) but I'll take it. Plus some V10 SuperDutys are cheap enough the replacing your truck might not be too much of and investment to make. Look around a bit and see what you come up with.

The 3V 6.8l has 62 more hp and 92 tq more than the 5.4l 3V so yeah you can expect a very noticeable performance increase with the 6.8l. Is it worth the money you would spend on anothertruck? Thats for you to decide.

I'd wager your truck probably has 3.73s gears?

As for the 4k rpm your 5.4l runs while towing, that is not a problem. Let the truck do what it needs to do. Either engine is within its designed rpm range at 4k rpm.

Do yourself a favor and read the sidewalls of your trailer tires. You may be surprised at what the max speed rating is.

I would recommend staying with what you have and adding a tuner. Like others have already mentioned the 4K rpm is nothing let it rev. The weight your towing really doesn't need anything bigger especially for the amount of time you say you tow.

Also, if you havent done it, change your plugs. That made a big difference on my 05 f150 at 120k. If I was in your shoes I and that was the only problem I had with the truck I would call 5star, get a tune and go a bit steeper on the gears.

Yep - great advice.

As is the tuner and possibly the re-gear (depending on what gears you have now). Have you changed the tires/rims from stock?

Hey thanks guys for the info.No there the stock rims and tires are stock size.I have read on this site about the motors likeing to rev just not used to it i guess.I had a 08 ram before i bought this truck it was only a 1/2 though but man that hemi would pull my trailer like no tomorrow i mean it didn't even flinch at moving it and i could run at 70 m.p.h with the tow/haul mode on at about 2600-2700 rpm's.That's i guess why i am just not used to this 5.4 or something it just seems wierd to me to let the motor rev like that for periods of time. But the ram could not even come close to towing it like ford it is a dream towing this with my ford just need more power that's all. Also i have talked to a few shops around here and they told me that those tuners for the 5.4 don't really do anything at least anything noticeable just don't wanna waste money on a tuner if it does not really do anything noticeable that's all.

I think your asking alot of that truck and motor combo. Slow down and enjoy the ride. Most TT tires are speed rated to only 65 mph anyway. You've been given some good advice so for. Regear and get a tuner. Cheaper than a new truck. Good luck, John

Off the shelf tuners with canned tunes will not do much, so are absolutly horrid and not safe. A good tuner with custom tunes will make a very noticable difference. I would urge you to spend the less than $400 price tag and get a tuner from 5 Star or another reputable shop that does custom tunes. Five star has very good performance and tow tunes developed for the modular SDs. I think you will be surprised at the difference.
