2007 sporttrac antifreeze dumb question?
hello,
my wife has an 07 sporttrac xlt-v8, the manual reads to use motorcraft "gold" antifreeze, the fill container is less than a quart low, but i would like to top it off, no one local autozone, orielys, advanced ,knows of gold antifreeze,i called the ford dealer they have at 22.50 per gallon, my question is i have some prestone 50/50 that claims mixes with all antifreezes, would it be wise to use ?

your Sport Trac is pushing almost 4 yrs old. I suggest you drain the current stuff out as close to 100% as possible and put new in.
don't know where you live, but a safe mixture is generally 50/50 anti-freeze to water. The reason Ford specifies the "gold" stuff is because of the aluminum motor. The antifreeze is supposed to be of some special stuff that won't interact with the aluminum and corrode.
I always used the GM Coolant. If you read the fine print, it is developed specifically for Aluminum motors. Never had an issue doing that. Sorry to not answer your question specifically. The Prestone 50/50 mix is pretty decent. Check the small print. I think it is good for the aluminum motors as well

To the best of my knowledge all antifreeze except the gm dexcool is an ethylene glycol base the only differences are the additives. I believe the Oreilly any make stuff is actually gold in color and may very well be the same as the ford. Just a thought but as far as topping it off with the prestone i wouldnt worry about it at all shouldnt hurt anything. I would agree with tylus that if not done before a drain and fill or even flush would be better
