injectors fail cct cold but pass hot

I got 215K on the truck. In the mornings the truck has a shake/surging when driving steady at 40mph in fourth gear. When hot the idle could be smooth or it could have a slight shake enough to feel it in the seat and steering wheel. I run the CCT when the engine is hot and always get a P1111 pass code. I tried a cold CCT by using a resistor to trick the computer into thinking the engine was at 165F and I got a P0275 and P0284, so cyl 5 and 8 failed. I have the black CPS.

Think I can use them till spring or should I replace now?
Where does everyone get their stage ones?

The CCT will always fail on a cold engine. Your only supposed to do it on a hot engine. Haven't heard of anyone using a resistor to trick the PCM for a cold CCT, but if you think there are injector problems when cold, pull the valve covers and start the engine cold. Make sure all the injectors are firing(oil discharging from oil spouts). If not, it's a problem. From there check the UVCH, then if you find everything is OK then you can swap the bad injectors with good injectors to completely rule out the harness or any wiring. If the miss follows the injector, theres your problem.

Most of us get our injectors from Jim at Rosewood Diesel Shop. He is our forum sponsor.

I've heard of it Travis. The PCM won't run the CCT on a cold engine. The only way to get it done is to unplug the EOT sensor and stick a resistor in there to fool the PCM into thinking the truck is warmed up.

It can have the tendency to retard the timing a bit, so it's often a wise idea to double check your results. Our OP had 5 & 8 fail. If he can repeat these results, I'd suggest pulling the valve covers and watching those two for oil discharge on a cold start.

What resistor did you use? A 5.4k ohm is around 160 deg I believe. I used to have a link to a list of all the different resistors and the corresponding oil temps, but I lost it when my last computer died.

I used a 4.7k resistor which my interceptor guage said was 165F EOT. WHere is #5 & #8 located. THE pass side is easier for me to remove so which injector should i look at?

are you sure?

I Last I checked pass was 5-8 and drivers side was 1-4
Going from front to the cab.
cause I know pass side back corner is 8.

Then again, for the CCT test, it could be the way your saying.

165 isn't the best tempt to test the truck at, if you actually tested it at 165, i'm sure you'd fail then as well. But you already said it will pass at operating temp, which is 200.

Try a cold test with tricking it that its above 190.

The resistor test is to help identify cold running problems so you can single out an injector.
If your truck is running good, then I doubt you have a problem.
Mine fails 2 injectors and there are nothing wrong with mine.

Interesting, Thanks chris.

I was incorrectly informed then.

Anyways.
The CCT test is to help you figure out which injectors are bad if you have injector problems.
Ask the injector guys, they will tell you that its not necessarily usefull if your truck is running okay.

If you are having cold idle problems, you might have some broken nozzle springs or bad Glow plugs.

William the gassers are number the way you said. Just not the diesels.

Yeah, I wish I could remember who told me otherwise.
Cause I didn't assume that info, somebody on here told it to me.

It's nice to be informed. =)

If it matters, my friends powerstroke has faulty injectors when cold but runs good when it warms up, he has been running it like that for the last 2 years that I know of.

Thats after checking all the glow plugs with an ohm meter.

I got some time to take the valve covers off. I found #3(pass side second from front) glowplug pin on the interior side of the uvch burnt and bubbling the plastic. All my injectors are AO coded. The amount of oil discharging from them varies for each injector and some are more forcefully discharging oil.

Where to get the valve cover gasket and uvch from?
Should I do both sides?
Should I replace the glowplug the the pin is burnt on? it still ohms out like the others. All glow plugs are ZD11 and were replaced 3 years ago

What do you think about the differences in oil discharge from each injector?
