with that orientation of the turbine vertical it may leak oil from the seal because it's already toast and the seat is filled with coked up oil deposits.
You should remove the turbine to get to the three tx bolts so you can access the seal and replace it.
Once you have your new seal snapped into its seated position I think all your troubles will be over and you won't have to worry about it leaking any longer.

BENCHWRENCH... when you installed the piston ring type seal on turbine side... Did the seal seat completely flat on the shaft?? or could you squeeze the seal together to eliminate the "gap" in the seal.....

If you cant close the gap enough to stop oil, that probably is where my issue is... It may not be a bad seal... Just the oil got to a level higher than the gap in the seal.....

In your writeup you write "install seal with gap orientated UP, that tells me that the oil (due to the large return line) shouldn't get any higher than that gap in the seal (unless there is a restriction).....

I'm just a backyard wrencher, this info is all what Ive gathered from FTE and various other Forums..... But I could still be wrong.....

Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, I plan on doing the rebuilt kit on my turbo. The fan has some play up and down. Would this kit reduce some play?

Well, just finished, it seem to have remove some play, may be .001mm, but it does not touch any part of the housing, so I will be reinstall and see.

The metal ring that provided in the kit that goes on the shaft did not have any V or U groove, so I just installed it.

Will run the thing tomorow, hopefully

Leaking turbo seal

Bench wrench,

When you were leaking oil was it enough to be noticeable or did you only see the exhaust smoke? Also, can I test this without removing the turbo?

Thanks

it was puffing smoke which showed signs of a leaking seal.
No you don't have to remove the turbo to see if it's leaking.
However, You need to remove the down pipe from the turbo to inspect.
Look at the first picture in this thread to get an idea of what to expect.

Do you have any torque specs on the internal bolts, the 12point 8mm ones and the Torx ones inside the Turbo? Also the 8 that hold the compressor housing on? I am rebuilding mine but cannot find those much needed specs...

Brother BenchWench,
Out flipping standing demonstration and practical application rebuilding your turbo; A+, top shelf material. Twelve years since your posting, and I am benefiting by utilizing your tutorial . Good Mojo still coming your way. Thank you for taking the time. I am sure Diesel Tech Ron would fully approve your work.
