engine accelerating on its own

'93 E150, 5ltr/302ci, FI, auto/OD

accelerates on its own, and will hold 60 MPH in OD

I can be sitting at a light, then the engine RPMs will greatly increase by itself

sometimes I can shut the engine off and restart...then it will go back to low idle

however, after a short time, the RPMs will start increasing again

occasionally the check-engine lite will come on for a few minutes, then reset
no customary reason found for this

the steering wheel air bag "clock spring" has needed replacing, so horn and cruise are not working

could this be the issue that's creating the acceleration?

or is it related to the fuel-injector system?

or something completely different?

your thoughts greatly appreciated

a problem with the wiring in the steering column could be causing your problem. Since you know that there is a problem with the air bag, I would start there. Be careful around the air bag though......those things will reach out and slap ya....

Maybe something to do with cruise control wiring in steering wheel. Try disconnecting power to cruise control unit and see if problem still happens
