Strange air sound

During a 1300 mile road trip towing my 16 X 7 enclosed trailer with a few bikes in it, I would occasionally hear an odd sound.

It mainly happened while going up hills.

I would guess its turbo related because the turbo is spooling up higher when this occurs.

Very hard to describe, almost sounds like a hissing sound.

Any ideas?

Edit: just realized it happens around 12 PSI and could possibly be considered a "spitting" sound.

Are you sure it isn't your radiator fan? I had my truck for months before that thing kicked in. Scared the hell out of my wife.

Pretty sure, as I've had the truck for almost five years.

I noticed it didn't do it for the last hour or two coming home. I was on my way back from Colorado going to Kansas City. Could it possibly be altitude related?

Maybe a loose connector at one of your intakes? I was going to say maybe it was in regen but then I saw the year. Altitude definitely plays with turbos, albeit not as bad as with a NA vehicle.

Ok, I'll show my ignorance. Loose connector at one of the intakes? Are you referring to the connections between the air filter and the turbo?

Different engine....But yes, if the turbo is at max boost, and there's a leak, it'll be the same sound....It'll get the air from wherever the easiest point it can...like a leak without restriction.

Haven't been able to replicate the issue in a while. Drove the truck to work for a few days, and nothing happened.

On my way back from College Station with the trailer. On the way down we had no issues, but on the way back during bad winds it happened a few times going up hills.

Sounds like its coming from the driver's side for sure.

I did check my connections when I got back from my last trip.
