My wife's 07 explorer does not want to take gas at the gas pump, the pump will keep shutting off, it takes forever to fill up the tank. It has been going on for about three weeks now and is not getting any better. She was so frustrated today. Is there a check valve in the vent system of the tank that maybe stuck. I took some hose and blew air in the tank to see if it was stopped up, but the air slowly escaped after I removed the hose, almost like a balloon deflating, I am wondering if this is causing too much backpressure on the fuel nozzle causing the nozzle to shut off early, and also would this be covered under the powertrain warranty.

 

I had the same infuriating issue with my 2008 E250. I have to fuel it up every morning and putting 35 gallons in it took 30 minutes. After about a week of this I had to do something. Since it was under an extended warranty I just took it to he dealership. They said that a vent/vapor line was clogged with a white substance. They had to drop the tank to find and fix it.

Actually for yours I found this TSB.

07-25-3 FUEL FILL - SLOW OR EARLY SHUT OFF - BUILT BEFORE 11/28/2007

ISSUE:
Some 2006-2008 Explorer and Mountaineer vehicles built before 11/28/2007 may exhibit a slow or difficult fuel fill or early pump shut off condition when refueling. This symptom may be accompanied by DTC P0451. This concern may be due to water or ice causing a restriction in the fresh air hose connected to the fuel filler housing and not allowing the fuel system to vent properly.

ACTION:
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Replace the fuel filler pipe fresh air vent tube with the redesigned shepherd hook tube. Inspect the vapor lines and Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) canister for water contamination. If the vapor line has water in it, clean the lines with shop air. If EVAP canister is contaminated with water, replace the canister.

Disconnect the fresh air tube at the dust separator and inspect for water intrusion.
If water is not present do not continue with this TSB. Follow normal diagnostic procedures found in the Work Shop Manual (WSM) Section 310-00 pinpoint test A.
If water is present, replace the fuel filler pipe fresh air vent line with the revised vent line.
Remove the EVAP canister and inspect for water intrusion. If contaminated replace the EVAP canister. Refer to the WSM, Section 310-01.
Clean the vapor lines with 100 psi of regulated shop air.

thnks ncranchero, i am planning on pulling the vent line next weekend, if the wife can keep it parked long enough. I called the dealership and they said the line is possibly clogged also, I would do try the tsb but it is not covered under warranty
