VIDEO: How to Replace 1992 Ranger Front Rotors and Bearings

Replacing the rotors and re-packing the wheel bearings on your 1992 Ford Ranger will allow you to drive and enjoy your truck for many additional miles.

Tools and Other Items You Will Require

  • large and small flat head screwdrivers
  • mallet
  • hammer
  • special purchase tool: four-prong spanner wrench (2-1/4 inch diameter)
  • ½-drive ratchet and extension
  • torque wrench
  • kerosene or parts cleaning fluid
  • grease

Disassembly

Note: It is important you keep track of the order in which you remove the parts in this procedure.

After you remove the rotors, keep in mind you will be re-packing the wheel bearings, whether you install new or re-use your old bearings.

  1. Safely jack up the front of your vehicle, place it on jack stands, and block the wheels. After removing the wheel and tire, take the brake caliper off by pushing the upper and lower pins through the holes in the caliper bracket. Use a hammer and an appropriate screwdriver to do this, trying not to jam the rubber parts. You will reuse the pins. Have the tabs of the pins lock into the flat metal part of the caliper bracket so when you put it back together the tabs can lock on.
  2. Compress the piston cup and press the seals back up into the reservoir. Using a screwdriver makes this task easier. After this, the caliper comes right off. Place the caliper up and out of the way, up on top of the spring.
    3. Use a couple of screwdrivers to pry off the C-clip on the drive shaft.
  3. Remove the stress washer.
  4. Use your ratchet and extension attached to your special purchase tool to remove outer nut (nut is flat on both sides).
  5. Remove washer. (This washer has holes all the way around it and a clip that rides on a slot in the shaft of the spindle.)
  6. Use your ratchet, extension and special tool to wind off the washer that holds the outer roller bearing assembly in place.
  7. Remove rotor.
  8. Remove seal on inner bearing using a flat head screwdriver. Place slot in bearing assembly and give it a little twist as you go around. Seal will pop right out without damage.
  9. Clean all parts (bearings, seal, washers) with parts cleaner or kerosene and a nylon brush. Do not use a wire brush because metal may get jammed in bearings.
  10. Inspect the spindle for chips or metal fragments.
  11. Pack the bearings by pressing grease into the bearing cage. Use your fingers and the palm of your hand to press the grease in so it comes out of the top of the cage ““ the assures that grease is all the way through it.

Reassembly

  1. Place grease all over the spindle.
  2. Place first seal onto spindle.
  3. Install bearing into new rotor. To do this, place bearing into rotor and put seal on top of bearing. Tap it down lightly with your mallet. Then use a screwdriver with your hammer to tap it sharply, securing it tightly in place.
  4. Install new rotor on spindle.
  5. Install new or newly-cleaned and re-packed outer bearing; install inner nut with pin that sticks out. Spin rotor in order to spread grease evenly all the bearings and races. Use your special-purchase tool and torque wrench to torque to 35 lb. ft.
  6. Install washer, then outer washer. Use your special-purchase tool and torque wrench to torque to 150 lb. ft.
