This week’s Truckin’ Fast video features a newer Ford Explorer Sport in action on the quarter mile against a 2005—2009 Ford Mustang GT. In most cases, a newer Ford Explorer racing against a Mustang GT would amount to a beating for the SUV, but this is not most cases.
When it was launched for the first time in 1990 the Ford Explorer was able to reach one-million units sold for its first generation. Now, it has become the popular and best-selling SUV for nearly 25 years and it continues to grow as it is exported to over 100 markets across the world.
The refreshed 2016 Ford Explorer has just debuted at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show with a sharp new look and a new 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine, so I thought that this would be the perfect time to look back at a TV commercial for the original 1991 Ford Explorer.
Since 2011, the Ford Explorer has been based on a similar unibody construction to the chassis of the Ford Taurus sedan and after the Explorer was a body on frame vehicle from its introduction back in 1990 through 2010, some long-time Explorer owners were unhappy with the shift to the unibody design.
