2006 Ford F350 Review
As a top-selling one ton pick-up, the Ford F350 for 2006 presented a number of improvements from the previous year. Buyers also had new choices in styling, colors, and designs.
For 2006, the F350 showed a tough, bold look overall, with the front grill taking its cue from the Mighty F350 Tonka concept truck. Ford also offered 18- and 20-inch wheels, unique to the class, and an interior upgrade.
Three engine options were available on the F350. The modular three-valve, 5.4-liter Tritonâ„¢ V-8 producing 365 lb. ft. of torque at 300 horsepower; the Power Stroke diesel motor, which packed 325 horsepower at 570 lb. ft. of torque; and the top-of-its-class three-valve, 8-liter Triton V-10, which produced 455 lb. ft. of torque and 355 horsepower. Transmission options were a tough five-speed automatic and a six-speed manual.
Heavy-duty construction and engine power enables the F350 to haul up to 17,000 pounds ““ the most in its class. The frame on the F350 Super Duty has a fully-boxed front section, providing torional stiffness and extra strength. Backwards from the boxed front section, the frame is manufactured from the thickest gauge steel of any pickup. The 2006 F350 offered additional load capacity with its dual-rear-wheels (DRW) called the “dually.”
A “TowCommand” towing system on the F350 is the truck industry’s first factory-installed electronic trailer brake controller. The controller allows the F350’s anti-lock brake system to detect poor traction. The system also includes a special brake package, telescoping towing mirrors, and a TorqShift® transmission featuring tow-haul mode.
The 2006 F350 truck was available in SuperCab, Regular Cab, and Crew Cab body configurations. Trim packages were the XL, XLT and Lariat editions.
In 2006, Ford offered an all-new Amarillo Package on the Lariat Crew Cab. This package included blazing yellow paint, brush-aluminum door accents, chrome highlights, 18-inch forged aluminum wheels, black leather seats featuring Amarillo logo, and other additions.
Customers could also order a Chrome Package for the Lariat Super Cab, XLT and Crew Cab. This package included chrome exhaust tip, tow hooks, tie-downs, mirror caps, and step bars, and grille. Seven unique wheels were also available, which included a 20-inch polished-aluminum forged design for the King Ranch, Amarillo, and SRW Crew Cab 4×4 Lariat. To identify the series and the powertrain, the vehicle sported large, three-dimensional badges.
The paint options included many two-tone and mono-chromatic choices, like the new King Ranch True Blue Metallic Clearcoat/Arizona Beige and Black Clearcoat/Arizona Beige designs. Coordinated wheel-lip moldings came with the two-tone paint on some series.
