How to Change the Oil for your Ford Bronco

Changing the oil on your Ford Bronco is one of the best ways that you have to keep the engine on your vehicle running smoothly. Without fresh oil, you run the risk of the engine overheating and for some very serious and irreparable damage to occur. Therefore, it's good to change the oil in this car every 3000 miles or so. You'll likely find that you will end up saving money and time if you start to change the oil yourself instead of taking the car into a service station for this task. Also, you'll develop a better understanding of how your Bronco works and will have a better sense of the quality of the work that went into the process.

Step 1 -- Gather the Materials

You'll need the following items in order to change the oil on your Ford Bronco:

  • Jack stand set
  • Newspapers
  • Paper towels
  • Funnel
  • New oil (in several different quart packages)
  • Oil collection pan
  • New gasket system (optional)
  • Wrench set

Step 2 -- Prepare the Car

Begin by mounting the front end of the Ford Bronco up onto the jack stands. This gives you better accessibility to the underside of the car as you work. Next, lay out a set of newspapers underneath the front of the car. Prop open the hood with the attached bar inside of it. Be sure to wait for a few hours after the engine was last running so that the oil and other engine components are not dangerously hot.

Step 3 -- Drain the Old Oil

Place the oil collection pan underneath the oil container beneath the car. Unscrew the oil drain plug at the base of the container by hand, and allow several minutes for all of the oil in the container to drip out into the collection pan. Once it has thoroughly cleared out, clean up the entire area with a set of paper towels. This is crucial to do so that you can clear up any debris or other materials that may have developed inside of the container before you put in new oil.

Step 4 -- Change the Filter if Necessary

Although you won't likely need to change the oil filter every time that you change the oil on your Bronco, it's a good idea to check it while you have the vehicle mounted up anyway. Remove the oil filter with a wrench and examine it for signs of wear and tear or corrosion damage. At your discretion, determine if you should throw it out and replace it with a new one or if it is still viable for additional use. You can do the same with the gasket system, if you wish.

Step 5 -- Replace the Oil

Check in your owner's manual to see exactly how many quarts of new oil you'll need for the car. Plug up the drain plug once again and insert the funnel into the top of the container. Next, pour as many quarts of new oil into the container as you need, being sure to allow several minutes for the oil to drain properly. Close up the container, lower the hood and remove the front of the car from the jack stands.

Before you turn the Bronco on once again, you should check on the oil levels by hand. Use a dipstick to measure the oil reading. If it's too low, pour in a bit of additional oil; if it's too high, drain out a small amount of oil until it's just right. Then you can safely start up the engine again.

All of the different items that you'll need for this project should be available at your local hardware store. If you have questions about how to complete the process, which oil to use, whether your filter is viable or anything else, speak with a professional or a mechanic for more advice.
