If you're wondering how to change your Ford truck's muffler, you'll be relieved to know that the process is relatively easy. It requires basic equipment and can be performed at home with little prior experience.

The muffler is a crucial component of the engine that helps the engine to function quietly and smoothly. When the muffler is bad, you'll know it because of the loud sound that your engine will make when you operate the vehicle. At that point, follow the steps below to change the muffler on your Ford truck.

Tools and Materials

   - Floor jacks and supports
    -Lubricant
    -Automotive cleaner
    -Rags
    -Replacement muffler and new nuts and bolts for installing
    -Basic hand tools set

Step 1 -- Raise the Car

Use floor jacks and other supports to raise and properly keep the car up. Do not go underneath a vehicle that is only supported by floor jacks.

Step 2 -- Locate the Muffler

Look to the exhaust system to find the muffler. In most cases, it is attached to the exhaust system with rubber hangers and a set of bolts.

Step 3 -- Lubricate the Bolts

In order to easily remove the muffler from the exhaust system, you'll need to lubricate the bolts that hold it in place. Use WD-40 or another industrial lubricant to accomplish this, and make sure that you lubricate all surfaces around the bolts. The more that the bolts have rusted in place, the longer that the lubricant must sit in order to be effective.

Step 4 -- Unbolt and Remove the Muffler

Lift the jack up slightly to reduce any tension on the muffler, then remove the bolts and gently lower the muffler away from the body of the car. Be careful not to let the muffler fall on you, as it can be quite heavy.

Step 5 -- Clean the Area

Clean the exhaust system with an automotive cleaning solution or a rag. Loosen up the muffler hanging brackets by removing any bolts that hold them in place.

Step 6 -- Install the New Muffler

Install the replacement muffler by fitting it in place in the exhaust system. Use a new set of nuts and bolts to hold it in place, even if the old ones look good enough to use again. Replace the gaskets before you tighten all of the bolts, according to the installation instructions for the muffler.

Step 7 -- Adjust the Muffler as Necessary

Tighten the muffler so that it is as tight as possible, then fasten the muffler hanging straps in place. Tighten the bolt which holds those straps in place, then loosen the muffler slightly so that it fits into the exhaust system properly.
