How to Change the Oil for your Ford F-550

The process of changing the oil on your Ford F-550 can seem daunting if you've never attempted it before. However, this procedure takes a minimal knowledge about vehicles and only a short amount of time. Most people find that it is generally easier and faster, as well as cheaper, to replace the oil in your vehicle at home instead of taking it in to a service shop for the same job. Additionally, this will give you the opportunity to learn more about the inner workings of your Ford F-550 as well. Read on for a brief step-by-step guide on how to change the oil in your Ford F-550.

Step 1 -- Gather the Materials

You should get the following materials together before you begin:

  • Jack stand set
  • Newspapers
  • Oil drain collection pan
  • New oil filter
  • New gasket (optional)
  • Funnel
  • Wrench set
  • New oil packages (several quarts)

Step 2 -- Prep the Truck

Begin by mounting the vehicle up on the jack stand at the front. This will allow you to have better access to the underside of the truck so that you can get to the oil. Open up the hood and keep it propped up. You should also wait for a few hours if the vehicle was running previously, as the oil can be very hot otherwise. Next, lay out a set of newspaper sheets below the front of the truck to catch any oil that might spill as you work.

Step 3 -- Drain the Oil

Next, you'll need to drain out the old, used up oil. Place your drain collection pan underneath the oil container. Unscrew the oil drain plug by hand, and beware that the oil will begin to leak out of it immediately as it loosens. Keep it open for several minutes before you remove the pan, as it takes a while for the oil to fully drain out. Then clean out the area with paper towels.

Step 4 -- Change the Oil Filter, if Necessary

Although the oil filter won't need to be changed out every time that you change the oil in your truck, it's a good idea to check on it anyway. Unscrew it with a wrench and allow it to drain into the pan. Examine the filter for signs of corrosion or other damage; if it appears to be worn out, replace it with a new filter. You can also check the gasket system in the same way, if you wish.

Step 5 -- Add New Oil

Close up the drain plug and insert the end of the funnel into the top of the oil container. Pour in the required number of quarts of new oil through the funnel, and be sure to allow them to drain completely so that you get the right amount of oil. Close up the container and the hood, then remove the vehicle from the jack stand.

Before you start up the engine again, it's good to check on the oil levels once more and by hand. Use a dipstick to measure the oil level, and then adjust the oil in the truck as necessary according to your reading. This can take some slight tweaking before you get the level exactly right, but it's important that you have exactly the correct amount of oil in your F-550 at all times in order for the engine to be properly lubricated and to avoid potentially irreversible and serious damage to the vehicle.

All of the different materials that you'll need for the project at hand are available for little money at the local hardware store or a car body repair shop as well. If you have any more questions about how to best go about changing the oil for your Ford F-550, speak with a mechanic in your area for more advice and strategies on how to best do this.
