How to Change the Oil for your Ford Super Duty

Like any other truck, it's crucially important that you regularly change the oil on your Ford Super Duty. A good estimate for how often you should check on the oil and be prepared to change it is every 3000 miles of driving or so. Changing the oil regularly keeps the engine lubricated and helps to protect your vehicle from overheating and other irreparable damage that can occur if the oil levels get too low. This also gives you the unique opportunity to work closely on your truck and to learn about the inner workings of this vehicle. Finally, changing your own oil saves you time and money from the costs and effort of taking the vehicle to a professional service station to have this job performed.

Step 1 -- Gather Your Materials

You'll need the following materials in order to change the oil on your Ford Super Duty truck:

  • New oil packages
  • Oil filter replacement
  • Wrench set
  • Jack stand set
  • Oil drain pan
  • New gasket set (optional)
  • Funnel, newspapers, paper towels

Step 2 -- Prepare the Truck

Before you begin, it's a good idea to jack up the front end of theĀ  truck so that you will have better access to the oil pan and the engine. You can then open up the hood on the front of the truck and access the engine as well. Place a layer of newspaper sheets underneath the oil container so that you can catch any spills that should happen as you change out the oil.

Step 3 -- Drain the Oil

Next, you should locate the oil drain plug at the base of the oil pan in the truck. Place the oil container pan below that and then unscrew the oil drain plug using a wrench. The oil will begin to drip out of the vehicle and into the pan. Allow for several minutes so that all of the oil can properly drain out, then clean out the oil drain plug area with a set of paper towels.

Step 4 -- Change the Filter

Check on the oil filter, located next to the gasket in the oil pan area. Unscrew it with a wrench and then remove it by hand. Examine the filter for signs of damage and drain the oil from the filter into the collection pan. If it appears that you'll need a new filter, coat the rubber ring on the new filter with clean oil and then install it in place of the old one. Otherwise, replace the old filter in its spot on the oil container.

Step 5 -- Add new Oil

Close up the oil drain plug at the base of the oil container and then attach the end of a funnel to the open part at the top of the container. Check how many quarts of oil you'll need on the back of the oil package and then drain that many quarts into the oil container in the truck. Allow plenty of time for all of the oil to drain once again. After you're done, close up the oil container and the hood of the truck and then remove the vehicle from the jack stands.

Before you attempt to start up the truck again, it's a good idea to check on the oil levels by hand. Examine the oil dipstick and be sure that you don't need to adjust the levels. If you do, be sure that you drain out a bit of the oil or add a small amount of additional oil to make sure that everything is as it should be.

For more information about how to change the oil in your Ford Super Duty, or for answers to any other questions you may have, speak with a mechanic in your area. All of the tools and materials that you'll need for this project should be available locally to you at a nearby hardware store or auto body repair shop as well.
