2008 Ford F350 Review

The 2008 Ford F350 features a number of new additions from 2007.

The standout is the 6.4 L diesel engine. After gathering real-world data from the field and subjecting the engine to more than 10 million miles of testing, the result is a truck with better performance, more power, and reduced emissions. This “Power Stroke®” diesel produces 350 horsepower with 650 lb. ft. of torque. It is designed around Piezo electric fuel injection; a common-rail, high pressure fuel system; and an emissions system that decreases diesel exhaust using a particulate control, a system which reduces soot particles by greater than 90% and allows vehicle emissions to be virtually equal to a gas-powered truck. Torque numbers are higher due to an electronically-controlled turbocharger. Transmission choices are a tough 5-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual.

There was also a new interior for 2008. Knowing that for many owners their truck is their office, Ford took the successful ideas from the F-150 and modified them for the 2008 F350. A center stack is home to most of the vehicles switches, including tow brake and auxiliary controls. The center console is built for easy storage of files and a lap-top computer. Better integrated map holders and more strategically placed gauges help improve usability.

A re-designed climate control system offers more “quiet” and better air flow. This system includes a high-capacity A/C compressor and hidden air ducts, front and rear. Also added for better acoustics is the composite steel material used for dashboard construction, a rear bulkhead panel, more robust side glass, and additional padding on the floor and dash. Other improvements include two-zone electronic temperature controls as standard on the King Ranch and Lariat models, and a supplemental heater for diesel trucks, allowing for faster warm-ups in cold temperature areas.

More interior goodies include a MP3-player capable audio system (standard), and the optional Premium stereo system with six-CD changer, eight speakers, and a subwoofer. Lariat Crew Cab and SuperCab customers can enjoy a DVD-based navigation system featuring an in-screen dash. In the rear seat, passengers can view the eight-inch video screen and DVD player with a remote and wireless headphones.

For towing, an improved front-end and frame structure allows a Front Gross Axle Weight Rating (FGAWR) of 5,200 pounds. A 12,500 pound trail hitch is standard on the single rear wheel F350 with a standard 15,000 hitch on the duel rear wheel truck.
