Though a step down from the beast 7.3L of its heyday, the 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel still offers a pretty good punch. There are both advantages and disadvantages that you should consider before purchasing your next heavy duty diesel truck. Power Stroke engines are only available in Ford trucks and always have been. The partnership between International and Ford boosted Ford to a superior level in the 1990's and has helped them hold steady ever since.

Disadvantages

The 6.0L Power Stroke did have a bit of a reputation as a lemon when it first came out, and while there was some truth to the problems, the disadvantages were over glorified while the advantages were left in the dust.

Some of the problems this engine experienced was in the design of the emissions process. The problems were not mechanical by any means and most were caused by how the engine was treated. This was primarily driver error.

The 6.0L was phased out, but only because the 6.3L Powerstroke Diesel was ready for the market and fit the more stringent emissions guidelines issued at that time. This upgrade fixed the problems drivers were experiencing like: EGR component failure, lack of a particulate filter and low pressure rail injection.

Advantages

Though not currently being produced, there are many Ford trucks on the road with the 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel still running strong. With proper maintenance you can get the same durability, performance and strength you would with a different Power Stroke Diesel. This engine also supports an EGR upgrade and performance head studs which will enable you to put some major punishment on your 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel. And it can handle it.

The 6.0L is also great for towing, as the torque output is available over a wide power range. Off idle performance is also increased with quick turbo spool times provided by the VGT. The fuel mileage of the 6.0L has always been a positive selling point, getting 16-18 MPG combined and 19-20 MPG highway.

To ensure you've found a 6.0L Power Stroke diesel check the serial number. You can do this by looking on the left rear corner of the crank case. The seven digit number should start with 6.0 then will be followed by the build sequence identifiers. The advantages and disadvantages of the 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel is really determined by what you're looking for in a heavy duty diesel engine and your commitment to care for your truck.
