The 6.8L V10 was introduced by Ford Motor Company in 1997 when FMC introduced the 4.6 and 5.4 liter modular motors. All of the Ford V10 engines were produced at Ford’s Windsor Ontario engine plant. The V10 was not available in the F150, as only Super Duty models were available with the biggest of the Ford gasoline engines.

The 6.8L V10 shared the same bore and stroke as the 5.4L Triton V8, and with a 2 valve per cylinder head design this new motor made 305 horsepower – 5 more than the Dodge Ram V10 although the Ram had the advantage in torque with 450 to the 6.8L V10’s 420 lb-ft.

In 2005, Ford upped the ante for the heavy duty V10 truck market with a new 3-valve per cylinder head design for the 6.8L. The new 6.8L V10 made an impressive 362 horsepower and 457 lb-ft of torque. Dodge had done away with the V10 engine options in their work trucks in 2002, leaving the Super Duty with little competition in the gasoline market.

This 3-valve variant of the 6.8L V10 began production in 2005, and as of 2009, the price to upgrade from the 5.4L to a 6.8L V10 in a Ford Super Duty costs $699.
