Ford will offer a new engine with all 2011 F-250 through F-550 Super Duty trucks as well as commercial chassis cabs available in their upcoming line up of the toughest trucks on the planet. The new 6.2-litre V-8, which is also expected to be available with the 2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor off-road truck, is a powerplant that use to be referred to as the Boss V-8 and the Hurricane when it appeared years ago. The new 6.2-litre V-8 and older 6.8-litre V-10 Triton powerplant will be the only gas engines available for 2011 Super Duty trucks.

This new gas engine is a single overhead cam 6.2-litre powerplant with two spark plugs per cylinder and dual equal variable cam timing that drastically alters the timing of both the intake and exhaust values. How does it do this? Dual equal variable cam timing implements only a single camshaft per cylinder and two actuators per cam. The cams each separately actuate the intake and exhaust values on each cylinder bank. If the camshaft goes forward or backward using dual equal variable cam timing, both the intake and exhaust valve timing is increased or decreased by the same amount, thus the term ‘dual equal’. A single overhead camshaft for each cylinder also results in a stiff valve-train which allows for the camshaft lift profiles to be managed better and an increase in low-speed torque.

Dual equal variable cam timing has benefits that will make 2011 Super Duty trucks including this system better in a few different aspects that are important to Ford Super Duty truck users. 2011 Super Duty trucks using this system have seen an increase in the gas mileage, a reduction in emissions while sitting with the engine idling and better torque and power response when the throttle is fully engaged. The 6.2-litre V-8 has larger intake and exhaust valves that improve the ability of the powerplant to take in the gases it needs to operate and it has a short stroke for greater engine speed which increases the horsepower at your disposal.

The power that the new 6.2-litre V-8 powerplant will deliver to the wheels hasn’t been released yet, but you can expect this new gas engine to give your new 2011 Super Duty truck around 400 hp and 400 ft lbs of force to play and work with.
