strange noises

Subject: strange noises

I have a 99 supercab 4L automatic Ranger.  Sometimes I hear
a scraping sound while driving.  Sounds like I am dragging
something on the road at the rear of the truck.  I ruled out
the brakes as it has made noises at the stop light.  It is
rare but it lasted for ten miles one time. I feel nothing,
everything runs fine. I shift up or down, no difference.
Apply the brakes, no change.  It hasn't done it for several
days. But it sure sounds terrible when it does.  Any help
