Adam McLaughlin  asked:

"Where in the san francisco bay area are you?

I am in Santa Rosa."

Me and my Aerostar reside in the hills east of Richmond.
We are driving to Newark (CA) every day for the next coupla months; I'm
really putting miles onto the van.  My oil light comes on sometimes, the
result of Ford's truly birdbrained dipstick design, which gives lots of
false high readings (Aerostar owners, beware!).

Question #2: At 87,000 miles on a 3.0, would it be normal for my motor to
require a heavier oil, like 20-50?

Thanks to all who have replied. I'm learning some things here.

Richard

I had that engine in a 93 Ranger.  The light would only come on when the
engine was a quart down.

Also my engine had 120K miles when I traded it in and it only used 3/4 of a
quart of oil between changes.  I would get you motor checked out.
