I was talking to a fellow 87 4x4 2.9L ranger driver today about our trucks.
It seems that we both have the same problem. I was wondering if anybody on
the list has had the same problem and knows what it might be. For starters
we both get crappy gas mileage and we both have an occasional stumble that
feels like the gas is running out. It usually does it when slowly
accelerating or cruising. When it's stumbling if I either let all the way
off the gas or floor it, then it quits, when I floor it then the power
surges and throws you back in the seat. What could be cuasing this to
happen?

The guy I was talking to said that he had changed nearly every sensor and
the fuel filter but his has never quit. On mine, all I've changed for the
cause is the TPS and it didn't help. Before and after I changed it the
reference voltage was too low (about half a volt). Does any body have any
ideas how to adjust it. BTW last week I pulled the trouble codes and all I
got were code: 21, ECT and the EGR (not sure of exact notes, somebody threw
away the paper I had them written on)

Thanks,
Flatheadv8

Dear Travis,

The same conditions happened to me in my 1988 Bronco Ii, and it turned out to
be my high pressure fuel pump. This is the pump that sits in teh frame rail
under the left foot of the driver. It acted like this to me for a few weeks
before I nailed it, while stranded on the side of the highway. :-)

Good luck,

Adam
