I probably don't have all the info I need to ask this question, but I'm going to forge ahead anyway: A friend of mine has a mid-80's Bronco with about 175,000 on the clock. He just bought a Mercury 3.8 V6 with less than 70,000 miles on it, and he wants to know if he can drop that 3.8 into the hole the 2.9 was in? This question is out of my league, since my truck is at least 30 years older than his. He's also not online, which is why I am posting this question for him. - -- Don Neighbors '54 F250 Named Grover "Any dropped tool or part will automatically fall into the most inaccessible part of the vehicle." grover == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Sep 1998 08:40:57 -0400 From: ALFRED BROWN Subject: FTE Small - Hesitation I have a 1992 Ford Aerostar with 104,000 miles, having problems with loss of power and hesitation when accelerating. How about a check engine light? The most common cause I see of hesitation is a rich condition cause by a bad O2 sensor. A hesitation without a miss sounds fuel related so if you're not getting any CE lights try a fuel filter, if that doesn't solve it check your fuel pressure. - -Russ - -----Original Message----- From: ALFRED BROWN To: small-list Date: Monday, September 21, 1998 8:51 AM Subject: FTE Small - Hesitation >I have a 1992 Ford Aerostar with 104,000 miles, having problems with >loss of power and hesitation when accelerating. I'm new to this list. I have '86 Ranger STX with the 2.9l engine with 137k miles. It has generally been a great truck, but is beginning to show its age. Judging from my readings the last couple of days, things like U-joints are probably due to be inpected and probably replaced. At any rate, I'm concerned with finding parts for this older truck. A couple of years ago, one of the seat belt clasps (the female side) broke. I literally went to five junk yards to find a replacement, without any luck. (The part had long been discontinued by Ford). I eventually did find a replacement that works (it's black and not chrome like the original) but, without going into the details, I was lucky. Does anybody know of a mail order house or something similar that deals in old parts (I need lots of things that are simply not being replaced)? JC Whitney is not the answer for seatbelts, at least. I want to keep the truck, but I really need a ready supply of parts. Thanks. Pierre L. I've seen a lot of comments regarding bad U-joints as well. What are U-Joints anyway and how can I inspect mine? Thanks. I'm new to CA and am interested in the get together at Disney Land. A couple of questions though. 1) How far is and how do you get to Disney Land from San Diego?? 2) Are there any residents of San Diego on this list who are going to the this get together that I may meet up with? I live in Pacific Beach if that helps. Thanks. Go north on I-5 for about 2 hours. Watch the exits, you can see the Matterhorn right from the fwy (left side as you head north). If you get to LA County, you've gone too far. San Diego is about 2 hours(depending on driving speed, could be less) SOUTH of Los Angeles. What you could do is take Interstate 5 North until you reach the 91 Freeway...then take the 91 East and look for the signs... AAMCO has flip-flopped from claiming there is no noise to stating that the noise is to be expected in small trucks. this noise was non-existant until they worked on the truck. By the way this is an '87 Ranger with a 5-speed and 130,000 miles. So far I've replaced motor mounts, transmission mount, exhaust (cat-back), and both universal joints with no change in the noise. What else could it be? pilot bearing machined wrong??? AAMCO has offered to re-replace the clutch however if this doesn't fix things I'll have to eat the costs. The first time I was having the roaring sound for quite a while, then the input shaft broke about one half hour into a two hour trip home. The shop that fixed it told me I had leaked out most of the fluild through three small holes used for installing purposes, then plugged with rubber grommets gone bad. This shop replaced the input shaft, and put in a new clutch and slave and PP, yet the tranny still roared when I picked it up. He danced around about the other bearings in the tranny looked "good" so he did'nt replace all, so just live with it. Seven months later I started hearing this "Playing card on the spokes" sound in the tranny, so I took it to a local tranny shop, they tore it down, and said that the cluster gear assembly had heated from the first breakdown and should have been replaced then also. Those gears were now brittle and breaking. They replaced it and another new input shaft, "matched set", you know, and put brass plugs in the three holes and cured my roaring problem!
