Check for play in the rear differential. My 1987 with 150 K miles had
developed extreme play in the spider gears and caused the same clunk that you
describe. After replacing the u-joints, motor mounts, tranny mounts, and
carrier I replaced the rearend ($100 at junk yard) and clunk and slop is gone.

The converter in your ranger locks up at about 40 mph and when ever your
crusing around and take your foot off the gas and then re apply the gas the
trans unlocks momentarily and then goes back into lock up
postition........this is normal.....

Your drive shafts universal could be gone that notorious for that all might
famous clunk when taking off or after letting off the gas.....Also the
spindles at the end of each axle get some slack over the years too.....ding
