Either that or get your foot in it. It's comment like that about the 3.0 that give people the wrong idea about the motor. If your diesel VW is faster than your 3.0 Ranger maybe you should take it in and have it tuned up. The Ranger needs to two or three stops for gas for every one the diesel makes, so overall performance is about identical. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ - ------- dianas __ __ ____ ___ ___ ____ dianas / / \ / / / / /__ / \/ /___ /---------------------------------------------------------------------- - --------- = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: small-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe small-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: small-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe small-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 May 1998 12:40:27, -0500 From: KNBD87D Subject: FTE Small - My rear window for sale Are you still interested in my rear slider out of my '98? The only one I know of is a 5.0 ... My brother had a 91 with a 3.0 5 speed in it and he did exhaust and filter (which I know isnt that much). I had just raised my 94 and put 31's on it. I didn't have gears done at the time. We raced and I still took him down. There is no substitute for cubic inches. If I spend as much money on my 4.0 as you spend on your 3.0 I will go faster ... period. I can actually probably get away cheaper because there are more performance parts for the 4.0. Even if you build the hell out of a 4.0 its gonna have a hard time competing with a mildly built 5.0. The only drawback to the 5.0 is weight and Im not really sure about the actual difference. Eventually, when somthing major breaks Im going with a 5.0 swap. That can give me power and reliablity. BTW the 3.0 and the 4.0 in the real world (not on the Ford sticker) get about the same mileage. Benguerel" Subject: FTE Small - 4.0L - VS - 3.0/2.9L I think most people would agree that there is no substitute for cubic inches! It is my opinion that only a highly modified 3.0L could be faster than a 4.0L. I thought my truck was slow (coming from a sports car) until I drove a 3.0L, what a dog! The 4.0L is also known for excellent torque figures in the lower RPM range. Whowever, smaller displacements usually spin higher RPM's, so it's not impossible. It's sad that Ford doesn't offer a V-8 (like the 4.6L) in the Ranger, now that would be a truck - watch out S-10 ZR-2, and Dakota V-8 owners! Andre E. My 88 2.9L Bronco II makes a relatively loud ticking at idle, and my 88 4.0L Aerostar has a light tick. I believe both are noisy injectors, not valve lifters. Try holding a long screwdriver to the fuel rail with the other end at your ear to trace the noise to its source. For example, the diesel will pull a 3 percent upgrade at 75 mph, and an 8 percenter at about 50 mph. The 3.0 can barely better these figures. Why? The VW can probably deliver at least 90 percent of it's 52 hp to the road thanks to it's low parasitic losses. A recent magazine test reported that the 3.0 delivered only 85 or so hp to the road. The VW weights 2400 pounds, the Ranger nearly 4000. I have however traced the noise to the lifters and adjusted the noisey one till quiet. It worked for a while but then the noise came back. I have the new cam and lifters ordered and hope to have them installed in about two weeks. I will report the results to the list.
