Has anyone had any experience with the jet chips pkg offered by JET? We are going to install this on my friends 96 4.0 Splash next week. The kit includes a k&n type filter, new low temp thermostat and a new chip. Well I guess i tell you how it goes next week. == FTE: Unsubscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Jul 1998 09:36:24 -0500 (CDT) From: Bob Johnson Subject: FTE Small - '86 Ranger 29.l efi - still running rich Thanks to all who sent advice regarding my '86 Ranger. Symptoms: high and low speed miss, black smoke out exhaust, will sometimes stall when coming to a stop. I checked the O2 sensor, and found all 3 wires damaged, so I replaced it - but no improvement in drivability. Have run several tanks with injector cleaner - no effect. Mileage is relatively poor - about 15 mostly highway mpg. Seat of the pants says it's getting worse. Feels a lot like one of my motorcycles in the rain, when I could see the spark leaking from a wet spark plug boot - misses, then runs ok, then misses some more. I don't think this is moisture related - no rain here in north Texas in a long time - hot and dry. I did clean the engine a few weeks ago, however - degreaser and water. Should I look for moisture in the distributor? Replace the ignition wires? Plugs? Will take it in to the shop on Wednesday for diagnosis if no one has a better idea re: what to check and/or replace next. Any advice will be appreciated. TIA. I'm new to the list, but I have been reading the archives and have seen quite a lot of discussion between the owners of 3.0s and the owners of 4.0s and 5s. I have a 98 Supercab Ranger 4x4 with a 3.0 and I am very happy with it. If I had done a little more research, I probably would have bought a 4.0, but the 3.0 will be plenty for my current needs. My previous truck was a '90 ranger with the 2.3. My question ( the first of many) is this: Is there any point in buying the Borla exhaust for my truck without having any headers available to upgrade at the same time? I talked to the internet sales coordinator at Borla and he said that there definitely would be an increase in HP. However, are the current headers so restrictive that they would negate the Borla upgrade? I know just enough about exhaust systems to be dangerous, so any info or crash course (oops! not a good term for this list!) that any of you can offer will be greatly appreciated. FYI: I have already installed the KKM induction kit with the S&B filter. Also, I want to improve the performance of my 3.0, but I do not want to make it loud. Are performance enhancing exhaust upgrades noisy by nature? Thanks, Dave == FTE: Unsubscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Jul 1998 08:05:38 -0800 From: Thom Cheney Subject: Re: FTE Small - Amplifiers: The Second Consideration Mike Fisher wrote: > Sound competitions are for guys with > small > brains and small penises. That's a little harsh Mike. I suppose some people say the same thing about those of us that choose to increase the performance of our trucks engines, handling or whatever. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as is customizing one's vehicle. I am not a proponent of unreasonably loud audio systems, but I believe that I have heard (and smelt) just as many lousy engine customizations at the stoplight. How about a little "live and let live", instead of sounding like a cranky old man? Now, the other side of the coin: We just celebrated a holiday that underscores the basic principle of this country: freedom. We can do lots of things in this country that other parts of the world only dream of. Unfortunately, we mostly ignore the concepts of responsibility and consideration. I believe that if I choose to install a 5000 watt stereo, I have the burden of responsibility to use it where it won't bother others. I also choose to be considerate and not bother them. Just as if I lob a 300 hp engine into my truck I have the responsibility of not using it's potential in a school zone or a crowded freeway. I say, let's all be responsible & keep the lawyers out of work!!!! I'm new to the list, just bought my Ranger XLT 4 door 4x4 yesterday. So far, really happy. I've been out on the Internet all morning trying to find some bolt on stainless nerf bars, finding out that a lot of Ranger stuff is just thru 97. Anybody familiar with nerfs for 98's? They advertise that they discount OEM parts, so check it out. They used to sell SVO parts for the SHO at discount. They are a multi-brand dealer out of St. Louis, MO. Clevenger" Subject: FTE Small - Honest power from 2.3L I have a spare 2.3L engine that I'm about to start rebuilding for my '86 = Ranger. But something that happened this weekend made me think twice: Out on the San Joaquin Delta in northern California there's a boat ramp = at Herman and Helen's Marina. The boat ramp is extremely steep because = it's built down the side of the levee. Even worse, the surface was = badly worn, pockmarked, covered with gravel and twigs and wet. We were = waiting to put our 16' tri-hull fiberglass boat on the trailer. While = we were waiting for our turn, we got to watch other vehicles pull their = boats out of the water. The first guy was in a Thunderbird, or something like it. (It was RWD.) = He was trying to launch his boat, and got the trailer wedged against = the dock. No matter what happened, he couldn't pull forward = (wheelspin.) Finally, a guy in a Toyota pickup winched the trailer and = helped him pull it back out. =20 The second guy was in a mid-80's Ram pickup (about the size of a Ranger) = and trying to pull out a Sea-Doo. He too had wheelspin, but also = stalled the engine several times and only managed to make it up the ramp = by leaving 10,000 miles worth of rubber on the ramp. The third guy was in an F-250 Diesel 4x4. His boat was at least 24' = long, and he pulled it out without batting an eye or spinning any tires. My dad was fourth. He has an F-150, 2 wheel drive, with the granny low. = I'm guessing the boat and trailer weighed around 2,200 pounds together. = The granny low was great for pulling, but he has an open rear diff, and = only by having four guys stand on the rear bumper could he get the grip = he needed to pull the boat out of there. Now comes my problem. I'm looking at several smaller "runabout"-type = boats. They weigh anywhere from 800 to 1,900 pounds with trailer. I'd = like to rebuild and turbo or supercharge my 2.3L, but not unless I can = do it reliably and still get enough power to match my dad's F-150 (4.9L = six). I think a supercharger would be a better way to go, because the = power would be available down low, and I wouldn't have to worry about = the boost suddenly kicking in and breaking the back wheel(s) loose. I currently have a 5-speed, but could swap it out for a heavier = transmission. (I like the granny low, but without overdrive, mileage is = atrocious.) Any suggestions? Is this possible with the 2.3L, or should = I scrap the Ranger and go with a heavier truck? Do I need 4WD, or would = a Posi or locker get the job done?
