Winkler" Subject: FTE Small - changing Explorer spark plugs and wires Hi - This weekend, I was all set to put a new set of plugs and wires on the old blue (93) Explorer. On the driver's side of the engine, everything looked fine, but when I went to look over at the passenger side ... GREAT GOOGALY MOOGALY! I _know_ my hands wouldn't fit into the space to reach the plugs, much less a socket. Can anyone post how this operation should be done? So you're saying that Ford won't go to it's suppliers and say "look, these things are selling like hotcakes.. let's step up production & we can all make some more money here." I don't buy it. If they had to, they could put SOHC's in everything. I think my original post hits the mark... they are #1... why try harder? When sales slip to #2 you watch how quickly the Ranger gets an update. It is possible to fit a socket in there, it just takes some patience and ability to wiggle the socket in there. My advice would be to use good plugs (bosch platinum) and buy a set of good plug wires (accel or jacobs) so you don't have to do it again in the future. - ---------- > From: John L. The brochures listed below are from a large group that I bought and are duplicates in my collection. I am trying to sell them to recoup my costs. They are for the US market unless indicated otherwise. The title on the front cover is in "quotes". If you are interested in anything email me and I can hold it. Do not send any money until I get back to you since there's only 1 of most of these. I can hold items until you send a check (personal US$ checks OK.) Prices include surface shipping. Sorry, this is not a commercial thing, so I cannot deal with any credit cards. I can cash US$ checks in Canada, so that's easiest for me (and you too, probably). Unless described otherwise, all of them are color catalogs and are in excellent or new condition. If you do not like anything, or if it's not what you need for your truck, you are welcome to a refund no questions asked (less my postage costs) if you send it back. We went to a place called Kelly Flats, just west of Fort Collins, CO. Within a couple of mile in the leaders truck bent his tie rod, a Nissan hardbody, next I broke a leaf spring that turned into the rear tire blowing that out. Good thing the leader knew his stuff and fixed the leaf with bailing wire and zip ties. Did a quick change of tires, lesson keep a full size spare handy! The next damage was done to a CJ-7 when he bent both front shackles. Hitting a buried rock under some smelly goo. On the same part of the trail the lifted ranger smashed both of his Lund running boards. I was lucky for learning where to go and just walked up the goo. The Last CJ-5, first time out in it, put his fan thru the radiator. Finished for the night! Next morning the lifted ranger towed the CJ-5 back out. I tried to roll my stock ranger, luckily I just got some light rocker panel damage. The rest of the trip out was pretty uneventful. Finally back out on the highway the Nissan guy drove his truck home with the bent tie rod, we knew this guy was a little crazy. Home was over 100 miles away! The lifted Ranger towed the CJ-5 home and the CJ-7 and myself took a nice slow ride behind them just watching to make sure. What a good weekend trip!! But brings up my question how hard is it to change a leaf spring? Any special tools? I already have the new ones. They will give me a rough two inches of lift in the back. Sorry for such a long story Just had to tell ya all how great the Ranger is in Stock form let alone if anything else was done to it! We then unbolted the axle using the floor jack to support it. Once the axle is loose lower but watck the break line. Then unbolt the old leave and bolt the new one in. We found it easier to put the spring to shacle in second. Then bolt it all back together. It was also easier to do one side at a time. Helps make every thing line up easier. Good luck. If your using used rear springs go buy a heavy duty center pin and put it in now. Also buy new U-Bolts. If you've even thought about using the old ones slap yourself. If the thought enters your mind again slap yourself twice. Poly bushings in the eyelets are a nice upgrade too! Jack up the back end. Put jackstands under the frame. Let the jack down slightly to unload the springs, then unbolt the U-Bolts, I usually dont bother unbolting them I just cut them with a cut-off wheel. Lower the jack more to get the axle out of the way. Take the old spring out. When putting them back together I usually put the back bolt in first then the front. Dont torque them until the truck is back on he ground. Use the jack to put the axle back in place. Line the center pin up with the axle pad then put your new U-bolts back on. I believe the torque spec is 80# but you should consult a manual. Repeat for the other side. Drop the truck and crawl under and torque the spring bolts. Check your torque settings after 100 miles. - -Russ == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Aug 1998 22:35:37 -0400 From: "Russ Parker" Subject: FTE Small - tune ups and things TAKE IT TO A FORD DEALER!!!!!! Tranny, Transfer case, Transfer case crossmember, driveshafts, front axles and all the brackets, springs, shock towers etc. If you live on the east coast most of the brackets are riveted on, so you gotta cut the rivets to get the stuff off. Use grade 8 hardware for re-assembly. It's actually not too bad of a job. Time consuming but not all that hard. You'd have to strike up a deal with a junkyard, but I dont think the price would be all that bad.
